About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Core Product Engineering organization within the Integration/ MAT team. In this role, you will focus on building, scaling, and delivering impactful backend features for our core product, with a heavy emphasis on backend system optimization, automation, and expanding our integration capabilities with the wider Coupa ecosystem.

Your work is directly connected to Coupa’s unified platform, where we redefine Business Spend Management. You will work closely with our Integrations team to design and evolve high-performing API layers . This is a highly autonomous role where you will tackle complex scalability challenges, write clean, robust code, and actively mentor other engineers to raise technical standards across the team.

Deliver Core Features: Design, write, and deploy high-quality backend features and scalable APIs using Python and Django Rest Framework.

Drive Integration & Automation: Collaborate closely with the Integrations team on API design, Kubernetes infrastructure, and automated system configuration.

Own Technical Architecture: Lead architectural decisions for our Django-based monolith, ensuring backend systems scale reliably with customer usage.

Sustain Observability & Quality: Use data, logging, and observability tools to resolve complex performance bottlenecks, handle edge-case failure modes, and strategically manage technical debt.

Code Review & AI Collaboration: Conduct rigorous code reviews and actively collaborate on developing development workflows leveraging AI tools (like Claude) to optimize code quality and team velocity.

Technical Leadership & Mentoring: Spread engineering best practices, draft RFCs, and mentor team members to foster technical growth and alignment.

Strong Backend Expertise: Proven production-level experience building and scaling backend systems using Python and Django / Django REST Framework.

API Design & SQL: Robust track record of designing stable, clean APIs and working with relational databases (specifically PostgreSQL).

Cloud-Native Infrastructure: Practical experience with Kubernetes (or a strong willingness and agility to learn it quickly).

Technical Autonomy & Empathy: A proactive, ownership-driven mindset with the capability to drive technical discussions, yet collaborate seamlessly within a tight-knit team and across global offices (including teams in India).

AI-Assisted Development: Experience with, or a strong curiosity for, writing and reviewing code using generative AI tools (such as Claude).

Architectural Vision (Plus): Strong system design skills or previous architectural experience is highly valued and a major plus.

Fully onboarded into our codebase, establishing strong relationships with Jakub (direct manager) and the team.
Successfully deliver initial, well-scoped platform tickets to get familiar with our codebase and release processes.
Gain a deep understanding of our system structure and initial alignment on the Coupa-Rossum integration roadmap .

Take independent ownership of major backend feature initiatives.
Design and implement structural enhancements to improve system automation and configuration.
Actively contribute to alignment and technical processes within our team structure.

Become the go-to subject matter expert for MAT backend features and system automation.
Successfully scale backend systems to handle 4x data volume increases (processing half a million pages daily).
Establish shared engineering standards and mentor incoming engineering talent.
