Finance & AccountingFinancial Advisor

We are seeking an experienced Senior Financial Consultant & Auditor to support federal financial statement audits, compliance initiatives, and public sector financial modernization projects. In this role, you will contribute to major federal audit engagements, including Civil Works and Military Programs, while ensuring adherence to government auditing standards and regulatory requirements. You will lead end-to-end audit activities, evaluate complex internal controls, and oversee the quality and accuracy of audit documentation. Working closely with senior government officials, you will provide strategic recommendations on audit findings, risk mitigation, and remediation plans. Depending on your qualifications and leadership experience, there may also be an opportunity to take on managerial responsibilities, including supervising audit teams and managing client engagements. This remote opportunity offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on public sector financial accountability, transparency, and operational effectiveness.

  • Lead and support federal financial statement audit engagements, particularly those involving Civil Works and Military Programs, in accordance with the Financial Audit Manual (FAM) and Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS/Yellow Book).
  • Identify and analyze trial balance accounts and prepare comprehensive lead sheets covering applicable General Ledger (GL) account codes and planned audit procedures.
  • Verify and reconcile budget figures, beginning balances, additions, placed-in-service transfers, adjustments, and ending balances across complex federal financial management systems.
  • Execute interim and final audit procedures, including internal control assessments and substantive testing focused on financial statement accuracy, existence, and completeness.
  • Conduct first-level supervisory reviews of audit workpapers and supporting documentation throughout the audit lifecycle, ensuring compliance with established quality standards.
  • Document audit results, investigate anomalies, resolve discrepancies, and review interim and final Notices of Findings and Recommendations (NFRs), providing actionable feedback to client leadership.
  • Evaluate internal controls over financial reporting (ICOFR) and computerized financial management and information systems in accordance with applicable OMB Circulars, including A-123, A-127, and A-130.
  • Advise senior government executives on audit activities, compliance matters, risk management, and remediation strategies.
  • Monitor and coordinate external audits, program reviews, and inspections conducted by oversight organizations, including the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Offices of Inspector General (OIG), and external Independent Public Accounting (IPA) firms.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, develop Corrective Action Plans (CAPs), and establish tracking tools to monitor compliance requirements, remediation progress, and key milestones.
  • For candidates hired at the Manager or Senior Manager level, supervise junior auditors and analysts, manage project workstreams, and lead client briefings.
  • Contribute to business development activities, proposal preparation, and broader federal, state, and local government financial transformation initiatives.

  • Manager/Supervisory level: 8–10+ years of federal audit experience, including demonstrated leadership of audit teams, first-level workpaper reviews, and experience presenting findings to agency leadership.
  • Direct, hands-on experience executing or supporting the remediation of federal financial statement audits within the Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), or similar CFO Act agencies.

  • Experience reviewing Notices of Findings and Recommendations (NFRs), identifying control weaknesses, and developing practical corrective actions.
  • Previous experience supporting USACE Civil Works or Military Programs financial statement audits is highly desirable. Familiarity with the Corps of Engineers Financial Management System (CEFMS) is a significant advantage.
  • Previous experience with a Federal Office of Inspector General (OIG), the GAO, or a Big Four or mid-tier federal Independent Public Accounting (IPA) firm is preferred.
  • Ability to contribute to broader public sector consulting engagements, including state and local government financial modernization, Target Operating Model (TOM) design, and subledger reconciliation projects.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage complex audit activities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, particularly when presenting audit findings, explaining compliance issues, and advising senior government officials.
