About The Role

The Director, Financial Reporting provides enterprise-wide leadership over accounting, financial reporting and the financial close across The Regional Group of Companies Inc. and its related operating businesses, including Income Producing Properties (IPP), Land & Housing development, and Corporate. The role is accountable for the integrity, consistency and timely delivery of financial results and for developing a high-performing accounting and reporting function that can scale with the Company's portfolio, development pipeline and evolving business needs.

The Director establishes common accounting policies, reporting standards, controls and close practices across the Finance organization while preserving the specialized knowledge and system expertise required for different business lines and platforms, including Yardi and Newstar. The role combines strong technical accounting leadership with hands-on operational oversight, team development and continuous improvement. The Director works closely with FP&A, Financial Shared Services and Business Transformation so that reliable financial information is produced efficiently and translated into useful management insight.

Key Accountabilities

  • Own the integrity, completeness, consistency and timely delivery of monthly, quarterly and annual financial results across IPP, Land & Housing and Corporate.
  • Lead and continuously improve the financial close process, including clear ownership, review controls, issue escalation and progress toward the Company's Day +5 close objective.
  • Establish and maintain consistent accounting policies, procedures, reporting standards and internal controls across the organization, accommodating legitimate differences in business models and accounting systems.
  • Oversee general ledger integrity, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, intercompany accounting oversight and the resolution of material accounting issues.
  • Lead preparation and review of financial statements, management reporting inputs, supporting schedules and disclosures, and coordinate external audit requirements.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance and ensure accounting treatment is appropriate and consistent with applicable accounting standards, including ASPE where applicable.
  • Lead, coach and develop accounting and reporting leaders and teams, establishing clear accountability, effective delegation, succession depth and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Partner with FP&A to ensure actual results are reliable, reporting definitions are consistent, and financial performance is explained using a common and well-controlled source of actuals.
  • Coordinate with Financial Shared Services on transaction completeness, subledger integrity, cut-off, reconciliations and close dependencies, while maintaining clear accountability for each team's activities.
  • Partner with Business Transformation on finance systems, data integrity, automation, workflow design and process improvements that strengthen controls and reduce manual effort.
  • Support the Company's growth by developing scalable processes, reporting practices and team capabilities that reduce key-person dependency and accommodate increasing business complexity.
  • Coordinate with Tax and external advisors on tax-related accounting, compliance information and year-end requirements. Tax currently reports separately to the VP Finance; any future reporting-line change would be determined separately.

Key Duties

 Financial Reporting and Close Leadership

  • Lead the integrated close calendar and reporting timetable across IPP, Land & Housing and Corporate, including clear deliverables, dependencies, review points and escalation protocols.
  • Monitor close progress, resolve cross-functional issues and ensure material estimates, accruals, reconciliations and journal entries are completed and reviewed on time.
  • Review financial results for completeness, reasonableness and consistency; investigate unusual balances, trends and accounting variances and ensure issues are resolved or appropriately escalated.
  • Maintain appropriate balance sheet reconciliation standards, account ownership, supporting documentation and review evidence.
  • Develop consistent reporting packages and supporting schedules that meet the needs of management, lenders, investors, auditors and other authorized stakeholders.

Technical Accounting, Controls and Audit

  • Interpret and apply relevant accounting standards and provide guidance on complex transactions, revenue recognition, capitalization, impairment, provisions, leases, development costs and other material accounting matters as applicable.
  • Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, control documentation and review practices across the Finance organization.
  • Coordinate the annual external audit and other assurance engagements, including schedules, supporting documentation, issue resolution and communication with auditors.
  • Oversee preparation and review of annual financial statements, note disclosures and related working papers, in coordination with the VP Finance, Tax and external advisors.
  • Identify financial reporting risks and implement practical controls that protect the integrity of financial information without creating unnecessary administrative burden.

Divisional Accounting and Systems

  • Provide leadership and consistent expectations for accounting teams supporting IPP, Land & Housing and Corporate, using supervisors and managers to maintain appropriate day-to-day specialization.
  • Maintain appropriate expertise in Yardi for IPP and Newstar for Land & Housing and Corporate, while improving consistency in reporting outputs, processes and controls across platforms.
  • Ensure property-level accounting requirements, ownership structures, project accounting and divisional reporting needs are reflected accurately in the general ledger and supporting schedules.
  • Work with business and operational leaders to resolve accounting matters while preserving clear financial controls and appropriate separation of duties.

Cross-Functional Finance Leadership

  • Work with the Director, FP&A to ensure actuals, budget comparisons, forecasts and management reporting use consistent definitions, periods and financial classifications.
  • Work with Financial Shared Services on AP, AR, intercompany, treasury coordination, expense reimbursement and other transaction processes that affect the close.
  • Coordinate with Payroll on payroll accounting, period-end cut-off, accruals, reconciliations and financial reporting requirements. Payroll currently reports to the VP Finance and may be considered for alignment with Financial Shared Services in the future.
  • Work with the Senior Manager, Business Transformation to prioritize and implement system and process changes, including requirements definition, testing, change management and post-implementation controls.
  • Collaborate with Tax on tax provisions, statutory information, tax-related accounting and year-end support without assuming direct management of the Tax function under the current structure.

People Leadership and Continuous Improvement

  • Set clear objectives and performance expectations for managers, supervisors and team members; coach and develop staff and address performance or capacity issues promptly.
  • Review team structure, workload allocation, skills and succession plans to ensure the function can meet service expectations and support future growth.
  • Standardize and document core accounting procedures, close checklists, reconciliations and reporting practices, while allowing for necessary differences between business lines.
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive work, improve data quality, shorten close timelines and reduce manual adjustments and spreadsheet dependency.
  • Establish useful service and quality measures, monitor recurring errors and delays, and lead corrective actions with the relevant Finance teams.
