As a Project Biologist, you will help protect local wildlife and sensitive habitats during vegetation clearing and related project activities. In this remote, part-time, on-call role, you will conduct biological and avian surveys to identify protected species, nests, and other wildlife habitats in or near designated work areas. You will assess potential environmental risks, recommend appropriate mitigation measures, and help prevent harm to trees, root systems, and wildlife. Working in coordination with project teams, you will provide on-site oversight during tree-clearing activities and respond when wildlife rescue is necessary. Your expertise will support regulatory compliance and responsible project execution while helping safeguard local ecosystems.

In this role, you will conduct field surveys, monitor vegetation-clearing activities, and implement appropriate wildlife protection measures based on project requirements and species protection levels. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Prevent damage to trees designated for protection, including their root systems and overhead branches.

  • Conduct biological surveys to assess habitats and identify nests or other dwellings used by birds, bats, and other relevant species.

  • Perform avian surveys in accordance with the project's scope of work.

  • Survey potential wildlife habitats on the morning of, or the day before, scheduled clearing activities.

  • Be present during tree-clearing operations to monitor activities and ensure appropriate protection measures are followed.

  • Be prepared to rescue downed nests when necessary and as directed.

  • Determine and implement appropriate mitigation measures based on the level of protection afforded to each species.

  • Recommend delaying tree clearing when required or carrying out nest rescue and other mitigation actions as appropriate.

  • Prepare biological survey documentation for inclusion in the project property file, including:

    • Records of biological surveys conducted in or near the work area when required.

    • Details of any mitigation measures implemented.
