Northwest Public Safety is seeking dependable individuals with strong communication skills and sound judgment to join our team as Public Safety Call Takers. In this role, you will answer emergency and routine calls, gather essential information, and provide potentially lifesaving instructions to people in need.

About Northwest Public Safety

Since 1975, Northwest Public Safety has provided emergency communications services to communities throughout Connecticut. Guided by professionalism, teamwork, integrity, reliability, respect, and accountability, our team operates around the clock in a state-of-the-art 9-1-1 communications center.

We serve as the primary 9-1-1 answering point for nine cities and towns and provide dispatch services for 13 EMS agencies, 11 fire departments, one regional ALS fly car system, and two law enforcement agencies. We also coordinate ambulance-to-hospital communications (CMED) for 28 cities and towns and six area hospitals.

What You'll Do

  • Answer incoming 9-1-1 and routine telephone calls.

  • Accurately document essential information and maintain detailed call records in the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

  • Provide clear, accurate life safety and pre-arrival instructions, guiding and supporting callers until emergency services arrive.

  • Remain calm, courteous, and professional when communicating with the public and partner agencies, including during stressful situations.

What You'll Bring

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and eligibility to work in the United States.

  • Proficient computer skills, the ability to learn dispatch software, and a minimum net typing speed of 35 words per minute.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Sound decision-making and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond effectively as situations change.

  • Availability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Dependable attendance, punctuality, and availability for mandatory overtime when required.

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay and opportunities for growth and advancement.

  • Comprehensive training to prepare you for success in the role.

  • Meaningful work serving communities and helping people in critical moments.

  • State-of-the-art facilities and technology.

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.

  • A 401(k) plan with a company match.

The Hiring Process

Our hiring team will review your application, résumé, skills, and experience. You will then be contacted to schedule a multiphase skills assessment. Successful completion qualifies you for an in-person interview and further evaluation of your qualifications.

This is a full-time, non-exempt 40-hour per week job position, working a variety of shift hours including combinations of 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts. A Collective Bargaining Agreement is in place with IAFF Local 5146. Pay commensurate with prior experience taken into consideration and as defined in Pay Steps of the collective bargaining agreement.

A comprehensive background check including pre-employment physical, drug testing, and criminal history will be conducted on potential employee candidates.
