The City of Hutchinson is seeking an experienced, service-oriented Building Official to lead the City's building and code compliance functions. This is a key leadership role for a professional who understands that effective code administration protects public safety, supports responsible development, and helps residents and businesses move projects forward with clarity and confidence.

As Building Official, you will oversee building and code compliance inspection activities; conduct technical reviews of construction plans; guide permitting and occupancy decisions; and interpret adopted building, zoning, and development codes for contractors, architects, engineers, property owners, and the public. You will lead and develop a team of inspectors, promote consistent and customer-focused service, and serve as the City's primary liaison to the Building Trades Board.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise in commercial and residential construction, sound judgment in complex code interpretations, and the ability to apply regulations fairly, tactfully, and consistently. This position is ideal for a collaborative leader who can balance efficient development review with the City's responsibility to protect health, safety, and welfare.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the daily operations of the Building and Code Compliance Division, including staff supervision, training, scheduling, performance management, and continuous improvement.
  • Review construction plans and documents for compliance with adopted building, zoning, and development codes.
  • Oversee inspections, building permits, temporary certificates of occupancy, certificates of occupancy, and related enforcement actions.
  • Provide clear, practical guidance to residents, contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and other City departments.
  • Address complex inspections, contested determinations, illegal construction, hazardous conditions, and code enforcement matters.
  • Recommend code, policy, and operational improvements that respond to community needs and evolving construction practices.
  • Represent the City before the Building Trades Board, governing body, courts, and community stakeholders as needed.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; an associate degree in Construction Management or a bachelor's degree in architecture, construction science, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience as a Building Official or Building Inspector, including at least two years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Multi-level commercial and residential inspection certifications in plumbing, electrical, and mechanical inspections at the time of hire.
  • Ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) Certified Building Official certification within 24 months of employment.
  • Valid Kansas driver's license and acceptable driving record.
