Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Computational Scientist / Engineer to provide technical leadership on research and development efforts within our Applied Computational Engineering group. This role is for a self-directed technical leader who combines deep expertise in applied mathematics and physics with strong C++ software skills and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

You will advance methods for efficiently running high-fidelity simulations of atmospheric and orbital flight, with a focus on achieving greater accuracy with fewer computational resources. You will guide a small technical team, coordinate with academic and industry collaborators, and work closely with a program manager to plan and execute project objectives that directly contribute to national security supporting the Department of Defense.

You will also turn prototype numerical algorithms into production-ready simulation software that is secure, high-performance, modular, and integrated with other systems through well-defined APIs.

Candidates with 7+ years of experience will be considered at Triton's "Senior Scientist" or "Senior Engineer" level .Exceptional candidates with 5+ years may be considered at a level just below Senior.

Technical Leadership and Project Execution

  • Provide technical leadership and direction on computational simulation projects, from approach through delivery.
  • Partner with the Program Manager to plan, schedule, and execute objectives, tracking milestones, risks, and resources.
  • Help maintain project schedules, ensuring deliverables are high quality and on time.
  • Delegate and oversee tasks for small teams of engineers and academic collaborators, providing clear direction and technical review.
  • Interface directly with government customers, supporting and leading meetings, technical reviews, and demonstrations.
  • Coordinate with academic, subcontractor, and industry partners, managing tasking and integrating contributions.
  • Prepare and own technical reports, presentations and contract deliverables.
  • Contribute to and lead proposal efforts and identify transition and commercialization opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with export control (ITAR/EAR) and information security requirements.

Numerical Methods and Physics Modeling

  • Develop, analyze, and optimize numerical algorithms to accelerate trajectory simulations, including high-order integration methods for systems of ordinary differential equations.
  • Perform convergence, stability, and error analysis to achieve target accuracy with fewer time steps and lower computational cost.
  • Model the physics of atmospheric and orbital flight, including equations of motion, gravity, aerodynamics, and coordinate frame transformations.
  • Verify and validate algorithm accuracy and performance against established simulation tools and benchmark scenarios.
  • Apply AI/ML methods where they offer advantages for acceleration, surrogate modeling, or analysis.

Scientific Software Development

  • Implement numerical methods in robust, efficient, and maintainable C++ code.
  • Mature research code into production-ready software that is secure, optimized, clean, and modular.
  • Apply performance techniques such as parallelization, vectorization, or GPU acceleration.
  • Design software for integration within distributed simulation environments.
  • Define requirements, architecture, and interfaces, and plan integration with other systems.
  • Maintain documentation, version control, testing, and build workflows, applying secure coding practices throughout.

Technical Communication and Recognition

  • Communicate complex mathematical and technical concepts clearly to customers, partners, and team members.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in computational simulation to support other Triton technical staff, customers and partners.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen with an active Secret clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one.
  • Deep understanding of applied mathematics, including ordinary differential equations, numerical analysis, and numerical integration methods.
  • Strong physics foundation, including classical mechanics and dynamics relevant to flight and orbital trajectories.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ for scientific or high-performance computing, with working competency in Python, MATLAB, and Java.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, such as serving as a technical lead or task lead on funded R&D projects.
  • Experience with client interfacing and customer management, including leading technical meetings and presentations.
  • Experience coordinating partners, subcontractors, or academic collaborators and delegating work to small technical teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with a proven record of delivering contract deliverables on time.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, including reports, proposals, and documentation.
  • Experience with source control (Git, Subversion), Agile development, and secure coding practices.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with trajectory simulation, flight dynamics, 6-DOF modeling, or orbital mechanics.
  • Experience with power series or Taylor series methods for ODEs.
  • Experience with federated or distributed simulation frameworks.
  • Experience with defense modeling and simulation.
  • Experience with parallel computing, GPU programming (e.g., CUDA), or HPC environments.
  • Record of successful SBIR/STTR or other government R&D proposals.
  • Publications, presentations, or patents in a relevant technical area.
  • Experience applying AI/ML methods to scientific computing problems.
  • Familiarity with DoD cyber compliance, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.

Education/Experience

  • MS or Ph D. in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Computational Science, or a related field strongly preferred. BS with equivalent experience considered.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in computational modeling, simulation, or scientific software, including technical leadership.
