Role Overview:

The Mechanical Designer will support the design and development of Jule Power’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role involves creating 3D models, mechanical drawings, and manufacturing documentation while collaborating with cross-functional teams. The successful candidate will contribute to prototype development, product testing, and design improvements, with opportunities to apply creative problem-solving skills and gain hands-on engineering experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design and development of mechanical components and system layouts for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Support the creation and revision of manufacturing and machining drawings using CAD tools.
  • Select and evaluate mechanical components, hardware, and materials from supplier catalogs based on design requirements, cost, and availability.
  • Develop and maintain detailed mechanical drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation to support manufacturing and assembly activities.
  • Assist in preparing system layout drawings, including component placement, cable routing, and installation details.
  • Design and produce complete manufacturing drawings with appropriate tolerances, fits, and GD&T specifications to support accurate machining, tooling, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to support system integration and product development activities.
  • Document design decisions, calculations, test results, and technical information throughout the product development process.
  • Learn and apply relevant industry standards and codes, including UL, NFPA, CSA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) initiatives by evaluating manufacturability, assembly processes, product quality, and cost optimization opportunities.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews and contribute technical feedback under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Assist in the development, validation, and maintenance of thermal, structural, and vibration simulation models using engineering analysis tools.
  • Support prototype builds, testing activities, and engineering investigations to verify design performance and identify improvements.
  • Assist with special engineering projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Approximately 1 year of engineering experience, including co-op, internship, or relevant industry experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and drafting software, including Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and/or SolidWorks. Experience creating manufacturing drawings, assemblies, and detailed part models is required.
  • Demonstrated design, build, and validation experience through internships, co-op placements, capstone projects, personal engineering projects, or relevant coursework. Candidates should be prepared to present a portfolio showcasing their design process, technical analysis, prototyping, testing, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings, tolerancing, GD&T, and manufacturing processes such as machining, fabrication, and assembly.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds and product testing activities, including hands-on validation, troubleshooting, data collection, and design improvements.
  • Ability to design with consideration for manufacturability, assembly, installation, serviceability, reliability, and long-term product maintenance.
  • Willingness to work in both office and hands-on environments, including engineering laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and occasional field or customer site visits.
  • Familiarity with Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), revision control, and supporting design changes in a manufacturing environment is considered an asset.
  • Experience maintaining controlled engineering documentation, including released drawings, BOMs, and as-built design records.
  • Experience working with suppliers and vendors to obtain quotations, compare technical proposals, evaluate component options, and support sourcing decisions.
  • Creative and resourceful problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions while balancing technical, manufacturing, cost, and schedule requirements.
  • A strong desire to learn and develop within a fast-paced product development environment involving battery energy storage systems (BESS), thermal management, and industrial equipment design.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada. International candidates must possess a valid work permit or authorization to work in Canada.
