  • Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies based on physician’s preference and sets up the procedure room with the correct instrumentation and supplies.

  • Provides visualization for operative sites by applying appropriate methods, including tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suction, and irrigation.

  • Positions patients appropriately for best exposure as ordered by the physician, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, and prioritizes patient comfort and safety.

  • Assists with body plane closures, wound dressing applications, and securing drainage systems.

  • Achieves temporary and permanent hemostasis by applying appropriate techniques.

  • Supervises other healthcare team members in the surgical environment.

  • Prepares and maintains the surgical area, ensuring proper disposal of instruments, linen, trash, needles, sponges, and other biohazardous waste.

  • Identifies unsafe or defective instruments/equipment and implements appropriate corrective action.

  • Verifies completeness of instruments/sponge/needle count.

  • Assists the team with safe and appropriate operating room turnover times in an efficient and organized manner.

  • Performs operative shave prep, scrub, or other patient care tasks as assigned by the RN.

  • Completes all annual mandatory educational requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards [Required]

  • Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality [Required]

  • Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values [Required]

  • Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements [Required]

  • Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals [Required]

  • Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]

  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]

  • Able to precept and act as resource person and preceptor in multiple surgical specialties [Required]

  • Proficient in a minimum of 3 major surgical specialties [Preferred]

  • Technical/Vocational School [Required]

  • Associate [Preferred]

  • N/A

  • 5+ years of experience as first assistant [Preferred]

  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the stated degree requirement:  

  • Technical/Vocational School OR

  • High School Grad or Equiv AND 2+ years of experience

  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Required]

  • NCCSA Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) [Required] OR NBSTSA Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) [Required] OR ABSA Surgical Assistant - Certified (SA-C) OR State Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) [Required]
