Leads and coordinates training activities to include development of curriculum and delivery of job specific training to meet departmental initiatives.


Responsibilities

  • →Designs and performs needs assessments to analyze and identify short-term and long-term organizational training needs.
  • →Surveys various training techniques, materials, and commercial offerings to select the most appropriate process for the delivery of training.
  • →Researches commercial training offerings and determines feasibility of use.
  • →Develops written training materials, visual aids, and reference materials, including course curriculums.
  • →Develops and administers assessments of staff skills for use in developing training strategies and curriculum, and effectiveness of delivery.
  • →Delivers targeted, audience-appropriate instructor-led training sessions.
  • →Coordinates student and facility schedules for delivery of training, and maintains and prepares appropriate records of participation.
  • →Performs preproduction, production, and postproduction work on computer- and video-training materials that use computer and streaming audio-visual technologies for on-demand use.
  • →Analyzes laws, codes, and policies, and consults with subject matter experts to design and develop curriculum related to trainees' needs.
  • →Conducts research or surveys to determine the effectiveness of training provided.

  • →Provides leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others. 

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to the job, plus three (3) years of experience in a technical training environment.
  • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

  • Experience designing and delivering training programs in architecture, engineering, construction management utilities, or other technical/project-focused fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain, update, and enhance large libraries of existing training materials, ensuring alignment with evolving processes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of instructional design methods and adult learning principles, induding experience creating blended and interactive learning solutions.
  • Strong facilitation skills with experience training technical audiences at varying levels Of expertise, both in-person and virtually.
  • Experience conducting training needs assessments, analyzing skill gaps, and developing targeted curriculum to support organizational goals.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with subject matter experts, project managers, engineers, and leadership to translate technical requirements into clear, user-friendly training materials.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with experience coordinating multiple training initiatives and managing timelines, feedback loops, and deliverables.
  • Proven ability to proactively plan and prepare training sessions in advance, including scheduling and coordinating with subject matter experts, ensuring SME readiness, and supporting them in delivering engaging, well-prepared content.
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites as part of the regular job duties.
  • Licensing for specific disciplines may be required. 

The Training Specialist Senior plays a key role in empowering the architectural civil, and utility project managers who deliver Austin's most essential capital projects. In this dynamic role, you will create, refine, and facilitate training that helps project teams build confidence, improve consistency, and navigate complex processes with clarity. You will maintain and enhance a robust library of existing trainings - updating content as standards evolve and expanding offerings to meet emerging needs. Your work will blend collaboration with subject matter experts, hands-on instructional design, and leading engaging learning experiences that make a real impact on project delivery across the department. The Austin Capital Delivery Services Department is comprised of multiple facilities located throughout Austin. If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Record Evaluation  you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
