Avalara operates across thousands of tax jurisdictions where regulatory changes directly impact customer compliance, revenue continuity, and brand trust. As regulatory complexity and velocity increase, Avalara must operationalize statutory changes.

The Sr. Project Manager ensures Avalara is prepared for statutory changes before customer impact occurs. You will guide execution across Compliance, Product, Engineering, and Operations to reduce compliance risk, prevent customer disruption, and protect revenue. You will apply AI to accelerate regulatory analysis, improve coordination, and scale execution.

On a daily basis, this leader:

  • Facilitate recurring Statutory Review & Readiness forums, bringing together partners to review upcoming jurisdictional changes, assess operational impact, and guide clear action plans.
  • Translate legislative or regulatory changes into structured execution plans, ensuring the agreement and tracking to completion of system updates, process changes, and communication plans.
  • Manage meeting agendas, documentation, action tracking, risk logs, and executive-ready summaries to maintain visibility and accountability.
  • Identify dependencies, timeline risks, and escalation needs across teams.
  • Lead structured incident coordination when compliance issues create customer impact.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to clarify and lead informed decision-making.
  • Track program health metrics and readiness indicators to ensure none are missed due to coordination gaps.

Your success requires facilitation, risk anticipation, and the ability to simplify complex regulatory change into applicable plans. The Sr. Project Manager transforms regulatory change from reactive response into predictable, scalable execution. You will directly protect customer revenue, mitigates tax exposure, and support Avalara's AI-first operational strategy.

How You will Elevate Avalara:

  • Ensure statutory changes are implemented ahead of deadlines to protect revenue and reduce compliance risk.
  • Guide execution carefulness across Compliance, Product, and Engineering
  • Improve operational scale through AI-enabled workflows and standardized governance
  • Strengthen customer trust through proactive regulatory readiness
  • Lead end-to-end execution of statutory readiness projects, ensuring on-time delivery with zero preventable customer impact
  • Improve understanding across Compliance, Product, Engineering, Government Relations, Finance, and Sales to translate statutory change into system, process, and customer readiness outcomes.
  • Find and address risks, dependencies, and execution gaps across teams
  • Apply AI tools to analyze regulatory inputs, improve readiness tracking, and identify new risks or dependencies earlier in the SRR lifecycle.
  • Establish scalable SRR operating mechanisms (intake, governance, tracking, and reporting)
  • Lead incident response for compliance events, including resolution and prevention improvements
  • Define and track program metrics (readiness, risk, execution velocity, and revenue )
  • Influence senior team members using data-driven recommendations
  • Represent Avalara in discussions with jurisdictional partners strengthening Avalara's credibility and regulatory partnership posture.
  • Create post-mortem reviews that convert lessons learned into systemic process improvements.

AI Expectations (AI Bar Raiser Standard):

We are hiring an AI Bar Raiser — someone who brings applied AI expertise and uses it to meaningfully improve how case management and compliance workflows are performed. This role is expected to elevate how AI is used across the team to improve resolution speed, accuracy, and scalability.

  • Enhance team capability by sharing AI best practices and contributing to broader adoption
  • Use AI to synthesize regulatory changes and create structured risk insights
  • Apply AI to improve meeting documentation, action tracking, executive-ready summaries, and communications, reducing administrative overhead while improving clarity and quality.
  • Analyze trends and risks using AI to improve readiness planning
  • Measure AI impact (cycle time, risk reduction, execution efficiency)
  • Ensure responsible and secure AI usage when handling customer, regulatory, or incident-related data.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, English, Political Science, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field
  • 5–7+ years of program/project management experience in environments
  • 3+ years of experience managing regulatory, compliance, or operational risk programs
  • Experience promoting understanding across technical and business teams
  • Applied experience using AI to improve execution, or scale

We are hiring a Bar Raiser — someone who elevates the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of the team's work. This role will strengthen how cases are managed and resolved by improving execution standards, reducing errors, and increasing overall team capability.

  • Raise standards for case ownership, resolution quality, and customer communication
  • Improve team capability through knowledge sharing, documentation, and peer support
  • Reduce repeat issues by identifying causes and improving processes
  • Increase efficiency by simplifying workflows and eliminating unnecessary rework
  • Improve customer outcomes through clearer communication and faster resolution

  • Use data and AI to improve execution quality and operational efficiency.
  • Enhance peer performance through knowledge sharing and the use of best practices.

  • Lead resolution of at least one complex, multi-jurisdictional SRR projects while maintaining zero missed attributable to planning or coordination gaps.
  • Lead resolution of at least one compliance incident from assessment through resolution, including documented cause and prevention improvements.
  • Reduce reactive escalations and execution risk through proactive planning
  • Implement standardized SRR processes that improve execution efficiency
  • Establish measurable program metrics for readiness and risk visibility
  • Deliver at least one AI-driven improvement with measurable impact
