If you are an engineer interested in understanding how all the components of an aircraft's avionics come together and ensuring they operate seamlessly as a single system, this position might be perfect for you.

As a Systems Engineer at Avidyne, you will play a crucial role in defining, integrating, and verifying the systems that comprise our cockpit displays and avionics products. Your responsibilities will include translating customer and regulatory requirements into clear specifications, guiding these requirements through architecture and integration, and supporting the entire process up to certification. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with engineers across hardware, software, and mechanical disciplines, all of whom are committed to working together and achieving excellence in aviation technology. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your systems thinking skills in a hands-on environment while contributing to innovative advancements in the field.

At Avidyne, we exist to make aircraft easier to fly.

Our mission, Simply Flying, guides the products we design and the way we work. We build avionics that are high-quality, intuitive, and straightforward to install; helping pilots focus on what matters most.

Responsibilities

Systems Requirements & Architecture

• Define, allocate, and manage system-level requirements for cockpit displays and avionics products, ensuring traceability from customer needs through implementation.

• Develop system architectures that balance functionality, performance, safety, and cost across hardware, software, and mechanical subsystems.

• Author and maintain system-level specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), and design records to support certification and production.

• Collaborate with hardware, software, and mechanical engineering teams to ensure requirements are correctly interpreted and implemented.

Integration & Verification

• Plan and execute system integration activities, bringing together hardware, software, and mechanical components into a cohesive, functioning product.

• Develop and execute verification and validation plans, including functional, performance, and environmental testing, in accordance with ARP4754A, DO-178C, and DO-254 guidance.

• Analyze test results, identify root causes of system-level anomalies, and drive corrective actions across disciplines.

• Build and evaluate prototypes and integration rigs to validate system concepts and support iterative development cycles.

Certification & Production Support

• Support certification efforts by preparing system-level compliance documentation and coordinating with certification liaison and DERs.

• Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to transition systems from development to production, keeping design intent intact.

• Interface with suppliers and contract manufacturers to communicate system requirements and resolve integration issues.

• Support production and field troubleshooting by investigating system-level issues and recommending design or process improvements.

• Bachelor's degree in systems, electrical, aerospace, or a related engineering discipline, plus 2+ years of relevant industry experience (or a Master's with less experience).

• Applied knowledge of systems engineering principles — requirements management, architecture trade studies, and interface definition.

• Skill in developing and executing verification and validation plans for complex, multi-disciplinary systems.

• General familiarity with avionics hardware and software development processes, including DO-178C and DO-254.

• Awareness of ARP4754A system safety and development assurance guidance and FAA/EASA certification requirements for aviation electronics.

Collaboration & Communication

• Ability to execute assigned systems engineering tasks independently and deliver accurate, well-documented results.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills for working across engineering, certification, manufacturing, and supplier teams.

• Organized approach to managing requirements, interfaces, and priorities in a fast-moving development environment.

Nice to Have

~1 min read

• Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, Jama, or Polarion.

• Familiarity with safety assessment processes, including functional hazard assessments (FHA) and system safety assessments (SSA) per ARP4761.

• Experience designing or integrating avionics hardware, cockpit displays, or human-machine interfaces for aircraft applications.

• Exposure to FAA Technical Standard Orders (TSOs) or EASA certification processes.

• Private Pilot License (PPL) or a demonstrated personal passion for aviation.

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you; apply today and help us build the systems that keep pilots safely in the air.
