Responsibilities

Total Portfolio Strategies (TPS): TPS is responsible for Bridgewater’s strategic investment management, managing over $30B in long-asset strategies for many of the world’s largest and most sophisticated institutions. Our aim in managing these strategies is to maximize portfolio impact for our clients by increasing resiliency, i.e., increasing the consistency with which they can achieve their investing goals. TPS deploys the same fundamental, systematic investment process that underpins all of Bridgewater’s investment strategies.

Client Investment Research within TPS partners deeply with Bridgewater clients and prospects on their strategic investment questions. We share our understanding of key dynamics driving portfolio outcomes and advise on ways that clients can maximize the likelihood of achieving their goals given their circumstances. Analysts also help shape how we communicate Bridgewater’s investment philosophy and process, alongside our performance and positioning amid evolving market conditions.

AIA: What's happening in AI will likely amount to some of the most consequential technological and societal changes in modern history, and it's increasingly clear that everyone will need a plan for how to navigate them. At Bridgewater, we approach AI from two angles: as investors working to fully capture how AI is reshaping markets and economies, and as practitioners pushing the limits of what AI can do to transform how we manage money. Our central effort as practitioners is building AIA, a fully functional artificial investor designed to meet or exceed human performance across the full range of activities a human investor performs: forming views on markets, sizing positions, and revising them as conditions change. Building on the capabilities and expertise developed along the way, we are also using AI to transform our human-driven process in Pure Alpha.

Client Investment Research within AIA partners deeply with clients and prospects on how AI is reshaping markets, economies, and their portfolios. We share our understanding as both investors and practitioners: what we see in the data and what we are learning from building a fully functional artificial investor ourselves. We advise on navigating AI's implications, from exposures across markets to the broader macro environment. Analysts also help shape how we communicate Bridgewater's investment thinking on AI, our approach to managing money with it, and the lessons we are drawing as practitioners.

Alpha Engine: The Alpha Engine is responsible for Pure Alpha, Bridgewater’s flagship alpha strategy launched in 1991. Our aim in Pure Alpha is to generate high and consistent returns, uncorrelated to markets and other managers over time. We pursue this by systematically deploying our fundamental understanding of markets and economies to trade long, short, and relative value across roughly 200 liquid public markets.

Client Investment Research within the Alpha Engine partners deeply with Pure Alpha clients and prospects on their highest-priority investment questions. We share our understanding of key dynamics driving markets and economies and advise on navigating the current market environment as well as more timeless investment challenges. Analysts also help shape how we communicate our Pure Alpha investment philosophy and process, alongside our performance and positioning amid evolving market conditions.

Asia: The goal of the Asia Strategies team is to create industry-leading portfolios and investment thinking in Asia, helping investors navigate the changing geopolitical and macroeconomic paradigm. This entails growing deep regional expertise, generating alpha in Asian markets, researching and publishing our understanding of the macroeconomic environment, and designing portfolio solutions to help our clients invest across the region.

Bridgewater has a long history as an asset manager in Asia. It started when our founder, Ray Dalio, first visited China in 1984, and we have been trading Asian markets since 1992. Asian markets have always been a core part of our global macro investment strategies, and Asian economies feature prominently in the research we have published on debt cycles and the changing world order. Bridgewater has offices in only two places – the US and Asia – reflecting the region’s strategic importance. Our first Asia-focused fund, launched in 2018, is now among the largest private funds in China.
