Schedule: Train on days, then move to nights. Hours alternate weekly between 36 hours and 48 hours. Days: 6:45am – 7:00pm | Nights: 6:45pm – 7:00am
Pay Rate: $18.00 per hour + $1.00 per hour shift differential.
Attendance Incentive: Employees who maintain perfect attendance earn an additional 5 percent of their weekly gross pay.
Position Summary
We are seeking a safety-conscious and dependable Buffering Line Operator for a fiber optic cable manufacturing facility to operate machinery and equipment used to encapsulate one or more optical fibers, providing mechanical isolation, protection from physical damage, and fiber identification.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Buffering Line Operator will load and unload fiber reels and string up loose tube process lines; monitor the loose tube process for potential quality defects; and document required process data in the SAP database. This person will perform required quality control checks and inspections to ensure manufactured product meets specifications and will read product designs and run the process according to applicable SOPs while following required safety precautions.
This role includes maintaining a clean and safe work environment, identifying potential safety hazards to a supervisor or other members of management, and completing operator preventive maintenance (PM) duties on a daily or routine basis. The operator will complete and maintain required production paperwork, including DMRs, inspection sheets, tally sheets, and dispositions, and will use the hand tools necessary to set up and operate buffering equipment and associated machinery.
The operator must follow all company policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements. Required PPE includes safety glasses with side shields in designated areas and protective gloves when handling heated surfaces, inks, and solvents. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must be able to read, write, and comprehend English for plant directives, document control, equipment operation, and supervisor or peer instructions. They must be able to perform simple mathematics to understand process sheets, masters, and SOP manuals and to maintain accurate accounts of materials produced, scrapped, issued, and returned to and from stock. Candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and roll, push, or pull cables and reels of varying sizes.
Physical and Work Requirements
The position is primarily performed standing and may require walking, lifting, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling, and reaching above the shoulders. The source position description indicates standing for approximately 90% of the normal workday, sitting 10%, walking 25%, lifting 10%, squatting 15%, bending 15%, twisting 10%, kneeling 15%, and reaching above the shoulders 5%.
During a normal workday, lifting up to 35 pounds may occur frequently; lifting 36 to 50 pounds may occur occasionally. The source document also identifies occasional lifting in the 51-to-75-pound range and specifies that loads over 75 pounds are not to be lifted without a hoist or assistance. Employees are expected to adhere to all company safety policies.
