Position Summary:

We are seeking an inspirational, experienced Music teacher, enthusiastic about teaching IB MYP and DP Music, and eager to contribute and collaborate as a key member of CA’s dynamic whole-school Arts department. CA is proud to have a robust and joyful Music program, and we are looking for a teacher who can continue to infuse energy and excitement into our program and inspire our young musicians. The ideal candidate will have experience leading orchestra and string ensembles, but music teachers with other specialties are encouraged to apply as well.

Teaching at Canadian Academy:

Canadian Academy teachers inspire minds and nurture compassion by providing a rich and engaging programme that develops students’ skills, promotes curiosity and love of learning, and prioritizes well-being. All students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grades 6-10, and most students pursue the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11 & 12, although 10-20% each year opt for a more personalized pathway to graduation that includes a mix of DP and other courses and leads to a CA Diploma. Teaching and learning are enriched by opportunities for exploration in the arts, athletics, outdoor education, service, and more.

CA is a highly collaborative professional environment, where innovation is encouraged and student learning and well-being drive everything we do. Subject teams work closely together and learn from one another, and opportunities for professional development abound. A low student-teacher ratio and a stimulating, well-resourced, technology-rich environment make this an exceptional place to teach. Our teachers get to know their students well, both in and out of the classroom, and work together to ensure that every student is appropriately challenged and supported.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach IB MYP and possibly DP Music courses at a range of grade levels (6-12)
  • Contribute to curriculum planning and program development as a member of the Arts departmental team
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of and passion for Arts education
  • Connect with and inspire students to outstanding levels of achievement in the Performing Arts
  • Serve as homeroom Advisor for a group of approximately 10 Middle or High School students
  • Supervise Personal Projects/Extended Essays as needed to support the academic program
  • Support students’ post-secondary goals by providing reference letters as required
  • For teachers with the relevant interest and experience, there is the possibility of teaching another MYP or DP subject
  • Alongside departmental colleagues, prepare and lead Middle School and High School concerts twice a year, as well as identifying and promoting other performance opportunities
  • For the right candidate, lead CA’s participation in annual international APAC Orchestra Festivals

Alongside either department members:

  • Maintain and oversee the department’s string instrument inventory, including violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.
  • Keep accurate records of instrument assignments, use, and loans.
  • Ensure instruments and equipment are properly stored, handled, and maintained.
  • Monitor the condition of instruments and identify maintenance or repair needs; manage routine care such as string replacement, minor adjustments, and basic upkeep.
  • Evaluate when instruments require professional repair or servicing and coordinate this as needed.

All Canadian Academy teachers are expected to:

  • Develop a classroom environment that builds positive relationships and fosters an ethic of care
  • Design, prepare and deliver learning activities that facilitate authentic engagement
  • Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs
  • Use relevant technology to enhance instruction and learning
  • Design and implement a range of authentic formative and summative assessments, providing appropriate and timely feedback to students
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress for the purposes of teaching, learning and reporting
  • Enthusiastically contribute to co-curricular programming (as a club supervisor, coach, etc.) and outdoor education experiences
  • Participate in faculty and parent meetings and special events
  • Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues and parents
  • Attend professional development workshops as required by the school
  • Endorse the school’s Guiding Statements

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching Music in a secondary school setting
  • Demonstrated successful experience coordinating student productions
  • Must be eligible to obtain a visa to work in Japan
  • Must have a teaching certification and/or relevant academic qualification

Preferred Experience and Qualities (in no particular order):

  • Successful experience teaching DP Music and MYP Music/Performing Arts
  • 5+ years of relevant teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to support the diverse learning needs of students in a class and to collaborate effectively with Learning Support and EAL specialists
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for connecting with students beyond the classroom, through athletics, co-curriculars, community engagement, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong organizational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commitment

In order to provide the best possible learning environment for our highly diverse, multicultural, international student population, Canadian Academy actively seeks to recruit teachers from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in international school faculties.
