The Director, Export Control & Research Security provides strategic leadership, oversight, and institutional expertise for Drexel University’s compliance with federal export control regulations and emerging research security requirements. This role ensures alignment with federal mandates, including NSPM‑33, and supports the university’s international research portfolio through risk‑based review, training, and policy development.
The Director serves as Drexel’s senior authority on export control and research security, advising university leadership, faculty, and staff on regulatory obligations and best practices.
- Lead and manage the university’s Export Control and Research Security programs, ensuring compliance with EAR, ITAR, OFAC, and federal research security requirements.
- Oversee international engagement reviews, foreign influence risk assessments, and security‑related compliance protocols.
- Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and training programs related to export control and research security.
- Serve as the primary institutional liaison to federal agencies on matters involving export control and research security.
- Provide guidance to faculty and administrators on international collaborations, controlled technologies, and restricted party screening.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders—including General Counsel, Sponsored Research, and IT Security—to ensure integrated compliance practices.
- Supervise staff supporting export control and research security functions.
- Monitor regulatory changes and proactively adjust institutional practices to mitigate risk.

Requirements
~1 min read- Minimum of a Master's Degree in International affairs, compliance, security studies, law, or related discipline or the equivalent combination of education and work experience (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information).
- Minimum of Minimum 7–10 years of experience in export control, research security, or related compliance areas.
- Demonstrated expertise with EAR, ITAR, OFAC, and federal research security frameworks.
- Strong leadership, communication, and policy‑development skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and federal partners.
- Experience in higher education or research‑intensive environments.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Experience with NSPM‑33 implementation.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade O. Compensation for this grade ranges from $119,470.00 - $179,200.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position will vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
