JOB INFORMATION

Job Title: Water Systems Utility Worker

Department: Water

Reports to: General Manager - Water Department

Location: Water Department

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Overtime Status: Hourly, Paid Overtime



JOB SUMMARY

This is a skilled position within the Marion Water Department. Duties include the safe and efficient operation of equipment and under direct supervision perform manual construction related labor as necessary for the overall installation and maintenance of the public water main system. 



ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED

  • Use of assorted power and hand tools used for excavation, installation, and maintenance of the distribution and water plant systems of the Water Department.
  • Clean and flush water main pipes, install and repair water mains, fire hydrants and water valves and related structures.
  • Assist in making water service taps; assist with meter service and installation; assist in building and ground maintenance projects; assist in performing underground locating service needs; and assist in meter reading as required.
  • Repair and restore street patches, sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas due to water main breaks.
  • Perform snow removal activities including plowing, blowing and hauling of snow; hand shoveling; applying chemicals and abrasives to pedestrian walkways and travel areas. 
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance including lubrication, changing filters, cleaning of filters, minor mechanical adjustments, and washing. 
  • Clears brush, foliage, and other obstructions; mows and trims grass and trees and perform other related tasks as required. Employee may also plant and assist in maintenance of new shrubs and trees. 
  • Perform work related to hauling of sand, dirt and gravel material for leak hole repairs.
  • Assist in the cleaning, painting and related housekeeping duties for the overall general upkeep and maintenance of system facilities. 
  • Other duties as assigned.



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS


  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing automotive equipment operation. 
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance of trucks up to 20-ton G.V.W., rubber backhoes, lawn mowers, skid steers, and other related equipment. 
  • Physical ability to climb and work at heights up to 120 feet desirable.
  • Knowledge of the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of construction and maintenance equipment and power tools.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of the city's geography.
  • Ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. 
  • Ability to prepare required records and reports.
  • Physical strength and agility to operate heavy equipment and power tools under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work outdoors for an extended period of time under all weather conditions. 



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Ability to work long hours outdoors. Ability to work evenings and weekends, occasionally, under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to read, speak, write and understand English to communicate effectively with fellow employees, contractors and the general public by telephone, two-way radio, written format and in person. 
  • Ability to operate a variety of department's motor and power equipment including trucks, backhoes, skid steers, and other related equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical labor activities as needed including using a variety of hand power tools, stooping, bending and climbing.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. at one time and the ability for repetitive lifting of up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to shovel material and work in excavated trenches in normal and adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb using ladders to perform various duties including but not limited to trimming trees, inspection and minor repair on ground storage and elevated water tanks. 
  • Ability to traverse variable terrain conditions not accessible by vehicle including but not limited to steep slopes, unlevel grades, and vegetated areas.
  • Ability to work alone to complete necessary duties as assigned.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace or citizens encountered while working. 



QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in equipment operation and routine maintenance of trucks and related construction experience.
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain at minimum an Iowa Class B CDL Vehicle Operator's License. Class A CDL preferred.
  • Possess or the ability to obtain Iowa Grade I Water Treatment Plant Operator and Water Distribution Operator Licenses within 2 years of employment.
