Duties: Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator I operates a variety of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles in support of the construction, maintenance, repair, and improvement of City streets, drainage systems, rights-of-way, parks, utility infrastructure, and other public facilities. Performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving excavation, grading, hauling, paving, drainage maintenance, utility installation, and emergency response operations.Safely operates a variety of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles, including pickup and dump trucks, stake-body and flatbed trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators, tractors, and other specialized equipment. Loads, transports, secures, and unloads equipment using trailers, lowboys, tie-downs, chains, binders, and applicable safety procedures. Operates equipment safely in confined spaces, active roadways, construction sites, and other challenging environments while maintaining awareness of personnel, traffic, utilities, and property. Performs excavation, grading, trenching, ditching, backfilling, earthmoving, paving, roadway repair, and related construction and maintenance activities. Assists with the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage systems, culverts, utility and sewer lines, stormwater systems, water mains, erosion control measures, parks, ball fields, medians, rights-of-way, and other public facilities. Uses grade-control and elevation equipment to meet drainage and construction specifications and operates inspection camera systems to assess drainage infrastructure and identify maintenance needs. Establishes and maintains safe work zones using traffic control devices, barricades, warning signs, cones, and other safety equipment; directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic as required. Complies with City, State, Federal, and departmental safety requirements; identifies unsafe conditions; and promptly reports accidents, injuries, equipment failures, and hazardous conditions. Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment, including checking fuel, fluids, tires, hydraulics, lights, brakes, safety equipment, and operational controls. Performs routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, minor adjustments, and replacement of basic wear items; documents inspection findings and reports mechanical deficiencies. Assists with daily work assignments and project priorities and provides guidance to crew members regarding work methods, safety procedures, and equipment operation. Assists with training new employees and promotes teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and effective communication within assigned crews. Interacts professionally with residents, contractors, vendors, and coworkers and supports efficient, quality public service. Performs manual labor and utility work as needed to support departmental operations. Participates in emergency response activities, including storm debris removal, flood response, roadway clearance, disaster recovery, and after-hours call-outs. Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements. Works the assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policy. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Qualifications: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment beyond ordinary passenger vehicles. Minimum of 120 documented hours operating heavy equipment or equivalent demonstrated proficiency. Valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a good driving record. Working knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and construction practices. Ability to manage personnel, materials, and time effectively. Employees occupying CDL-required positions are subject to federally mandated and unannounced drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying materials, kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work effectively and safely outdoors in all weather conditions. PREFERRED: Completion of recognized equipment operation training programs (e.g., TML or A&M Extension). Traffic Control I (Flagging) certification. Utility Safety, Trenching, and Shoring safety certifications. Class A CDL for operating heavy equipment.

    • From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
