As a Software Engineer at Cyvl, you'll build the systems that turn raw sensor data from thousands of miles of roads into the platform cities use to plan their work. You'll own features end to end, from cloud pipelines and APIs to the web app our customers log into every day. We're hiring across levels, from engineers a few years in to senior engineers ready to set technical direction. This role is based in Somerville, MA, or remote from San Francisco, CA.

  Design, build, and ship production systems across our stack: Python services, cloud data pipelines, APIs, and the Cyvl web platform.

  Own features from idea to production, working directly with product, data operations, and customers to understand the problem first.

  Build the APIs and integrations (Esri ArcGIS, Cartegraph, and more) that put Cyvl data inside the tools governments already use.

  Make our systems faster, cheaper, and more reliable as we scale to more cities, more miles, and more data.

  Use AI coding tools every day to move faster, and help shape how our team builds with them.

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience (for senior candidates, 5+ years and a track record of leading technical projects)

• Strong Python and experience building production backend systems

• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD

• Comfort owning ambiguous problems end to end and shipping iteratively

• Clear communication with both technical and non-technical teammates

• Geospatial data or tools (PostGIS, GDAL, ArcGIS, QGIS)

• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), Go, or TypeScript/React

• 3D graphics or point cloud work (Three.js, WebGL, LiDAR)

• Large-scale ELT pipelines or data lakehouses

• Early-stage startup experience or a history of building from zero to one

• Hard problems in the real world. You build end-to-end: our own hardware, software and AI, with work that shows up on the street in the real world.

• Ownership that compounds. You own outcomes, not tasks. You work directly with customers and across our team, and you'll own more, sooner, than almost anywhere else.

• Intense, with heart. We're building a category, so it's not a place to coast. We also take care of each other, have genuine fun together, and believe in what we are doing.

• Cross lanes. "Not my job" doesn't exist here.

• Own without a playbook. The plan is still being written, often by you.

• Try, miss, try again. We make big bets. Some won't land, and we learn fast.

• Be in the room. We're on-site in Somerville about 90% of the time. If you're based in San Francisco, this role is remote, and you'll be with the team in Somerville for the moments that matter like onboarding, kick-offs, and milestones.
