Job Summary
The Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Advisor is responsible for ensuring organizational compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures. This role focuses on the proactive identification, assessment, and mitigation of risks to prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental impacts while promoting a safe and sustainable workplace culture.
The HSE Advisor supports and verifies the implementation of the company’s HSE management system, policies, and procedures across field locations. The role champions a proactive safety culture, drives regulatory and company compliance, and provides technical guidance to field personnel.
The HSE Advisor is expected to demonstrate visible leadership, facilitate effective risk management, and promote continual improvement in safety performance consistent with industry-leading well-servicing contractors. Success in this role requires leading by example, influencing others to achieve desired outcomes, recognizing when practical and balanced solutions are appropriate, and consistently demonstrating integrity, sound judgment, and effective decision-making.
Pay Range
$34.00 - $36.00 / Hr.
Internal Relationships / Stakeholder Relations
A successful HSE Specialist must be able to build strong relationships and foster collaboration and trust among key stakeholders, including Field Operations management (Rig Managers and Superintendents), rig crew personnel, shared services teams (Training, HR, etc.), and senior business management.
External Relationships / Customer Relations
Develop and maintain professional relationships with clients and stakeholders to support clear communication and effective issue resolution.
Escalate customer concerns, issues, or grievances to HSE Management as required.
Essential Functions
Safety Leadership & Culture
Champion and model Ensign’s Coach Assist and Assure Process (EnCAAP), promoting a risk- and mitigation-based approach to HSE management.
Promote the use of company policies, standards, and industry best practices.
Lead initiatives that foster visible and proactive management commitment and employee engagement in HSE activities.
Support and facilitate onboarding, pre-tour, pre-job, and weekly safety meetings, and participate in hazardous operations as an HSE observer.
Compliance & Auditing
Conduct regular HSE inspections, audits, and compliance assessments at rig sites, and track findings through to closure.
Ensure compliance with all company, client-specific, and regulatory HSE requirements.
Maintain accurate daily records of rig visits, inspections, and activities.
Participate in job-planning activities utilizing applicable components of EnCAAP.
Incident Management & Case Handling
Assist with incident management, investigations, and corrective action processes.
Support case management for work-related injuries and illnesses, coordinating with field management, workers’ compensation, and medical services.
Reporting & Data Management
Ensure compliance with systems for collecting, analyzing, and reporting HSE performance data, including incident reports, audit actions, and metrics.
Prepare comprehensive daily and monthly reports highlighting incidents, near misses, hazards, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
Training & Coaching
Provide HSE support, coaching, and training at all levels, including short-service employees.
Assist the Training Department with training implementation and completion.
Mentor and coach field personnel to reinforce safe behaviors and work practices.
Other Accountabilities
Administrative
Consistently and actively comply with all Ensign policies and procedures, including:
Business Ethics – Fully understand Ensign’s ethics policy and apply it in all business dealings, including contractual agreements and negotiations.
Business Policies – Understand and comply with all Ensign policies, directives, and procedures as outlined in the Ensign Company Policy and Basic Directives Handbook for Employees.
Drug-Free Workplace – Maintain compliance with the company’s drug-free workplace requirements and refrain from being under the influence of mind-altering prescription or non-prescription drugs, including alcohol and other drugs of abuse.
Other Duties
Travel as needed to support field operations and organizational priorities.
Perform other delegated responsibilities as instructed by line management.
Technical Competencies
Knowledge of local, national, and industry-specific safety regulations to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
Technical proficiency in HSE auditing, incident investigation, and documentation.
Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Behavioral Competencies
Leadership to inspire and motivate team members to prioritize safety.
Crisis Management and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal); public speaking and presentation ability.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Willingness and ability to travel as required.
Confidence to intervene and apply stop-work authority to any personnel, including management and client representatives.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required.
3–5 years of HSE experience with a well servicing contractor (onshore preferred).
Qualifications
Strong commitment to continuous improvement required.
Certificate IV or higher in Occupational Health and Safety preferred but not required.
Experience in well servicing operations within the oil and gas industry is a plus but not required.
Deep knowledge of HSE legislation is preferred but not required.
Work Environment
Field- and office-based role in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment requiring cross-functional collaboration.
