Senior Software Engineer - Agentic AI
Quick Summary
Act as a senior engineer within a delivery team, providing technical direction and leading by example in design, implementation, quality, and operational ownership.
break outcomes into bounded work, provide agents with clear specifications and context, supervise execution, review generated changes, and remain accountable for everything that ships.
A Senior Software Engineer at Flooid is at the forefront of our product development, delivering the next generation of retail systems software to some of the largest retailers in the world. Our global engineering teams work on product domains and customer solutions, addressing mobility, high-volume systems, integrations, and large-scale data challenges.
Agentic engineering is now part of how we work. We are looking for someone who uses AI agents as an engineering capability, not an occasional assistant: specifying work clearly, giving agents the right context and constraints, reviewing their output with judgement, and using evidence to improve quality and delivery speed. You will be fluent in Cursor and help turn agentic development into a safe, repeatable, measurable way of working across the team.
This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer who remains excited by software engineering and wants to build, not simply advise. You will provide technical leadership inside the team, own work from discovery through production, mentor others, and help evolve the standards by which we build software.
Flooid offers a flexible, remote-first culture with hybrid working, access to Udemy Business, and a supportive team that values integrity, adaptability, and customer focus. Travel to Birmingham is essential. If you meet most of this and the rest looks like a stretch you would enjoy, please apply: credible agentic delivery and production engineering judgement matter more than a long list of tools.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a senior engineer within a delivery team, providing technical direction and leading by example in design, implementation, quality, and operational ownership.
- Own features and technical improvements end to end, from understanding the problem and shaping the solution through build, review, release, monitoring, and iteration.
- Develop high-quality full-stack software using Java, Spring, Angular, JavaScript, and related technologies, applying appropriate patterns and balancing functional and non-functional requirements.
- Work agentic-first in Cursor: break outcomes into bounded work, provide agents with clear specifications and context, supervise execution, review generated changes, and remain accountable for everything that ships.
- Apply spec-driven development so requirements, constraints, acceptance criteria, and technical decisions are clear before implementation begins. Keep prompts, rules, skills, and context versioned and reusable where they form part of the engineering solution.
- Use automated tests, evaluation, code review, security checks, and human judgement to validate AI-assisted changes. Treat agent output as untrusted until it has met the same or higher quality bar as any other production change.
- Create and improve reusable agentic skills and workflows that reduce repeated effort and make other engineers faster, sharing what works and retiring practices that do not.
- Design and evolve scalable, resilient solutions, including third-party integrations and legacy modernisation, and communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly.
- Drive engineering standards across the software delivery lifecycle, including clean code, automated testing, CI/CD, secure-by-design practices, observability, documentation, and safe rollback.
- Troubleshoot complex issues across services and environments, contribute to incident response, and ensure root causes and follow-up actions are addressed rather than symptoms being hidden.
- Partner with Product, Business Analysis, Quality Engineering, Architecture, and Operations to shape requirements, sequence work, manage risk, and deliver high-quality outcomes at the times committed.
- Use a small set of delivery and quality measures to guide improvement, including lead time, escaped defects, change failure, reliability, and where useful agent intervention or rework. Optimise for customer and business outcomes, not code volume or AI usage.
- Mentor and coach engineers through pairing, reviews, feedback, and knowledge sharing, raising both traditional engineering capability and confidence in agentic ways of working.
Requirements
~2 min readOur technology stack includes Java (JUnit, Mockito, Selenium), Spring core/web/remoting/boot, JavaScript, Angular, mobile development using Flutter and Dart, SQL and MongoDB, GCP, and Cursor.
Essential
- Strong experience as a software engineer with clear progression to senior-level ownership, including designing, building, releasing, and operating production software.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring, together with Angular or comparable modern front-end technologies and a sound understanding of full-stack architecture.
- Fluency in Cursor as part of normal engineering delivery. You can demonstrate how you use it to investigate systems, specify and implement change, review output, test thoroughly, and retain ownership of the result.
- Practical experience of agentic software development in a real team. Using code completion or asking a chatbot occasional questions is not enough; you have used agents to deliver substantive production work through a controlled, repeatable workflow.
- Strong engineering discipline across automated testing, Git and code review, CI/CD, observability, secure development, documentation, and production support.
- Ability to reason about architecture and trade-offs across distributed systems, integrations, data, security, reliability, and maintainability.
- A track record of delivering high-quality software predictably, working collaboratively across disciplines, and taking accountability for outcomes.
- Experience mentoring engineers and raising the capability of a team through technical guidance, constructive review, and knowledge sharing.
Desirable
- Experience with Flow Next (flow-next.dev), or a comparable agentic, spec-driven delivery framework that takes work from a reviewed specification through planned tasks, implementation, verification, and review.
- Experience creating reusable agent skills, rules, context, or workflow automation, together with familiarity with MCP, tool calling, agent orchestration, evaluation, or observability.
- Experience with GCP, cloud-native delivery, infrastructure as code, highly available systems, and retail or hospitality technology.
