Consultant Project Manager
Quick Summary
Supporting the delivery of projects across infrastructure, buildings, project controls and industrial environments,
Frequency is a New Zealand‑owned and operated specialist project advisory consultancy that has been supporting the planning and delivery of major projects across Aotearoa for over a decade. We work in close partnership with our clients, giving them access to experienced, senior people from day one and sharing real‑world knowledge that helps teams navigate New Zealand’s complex project pathways with confidence. Our work spans transport, water, health, education, industrial facilities, commercial buildings, airports and ports — often in technically complex or live environments where good judgement and strong relationships matter.
The opportunity:
Our Wellington office is growing, and we’re looking for multiple Associates to join Frequency across our Infrastructure, Industrial, Project Controls and Buildings service lines. This role is suited to experienced project managers who enjoy variety — people who are comfortable working across different asset types, project phases and client environments, and who want to deepen both their technical capability and their consulting skill set. You’ll support the delivery of projects ranging from horizontal infrastructure and vertical buildings, through to technically complex brownfield and operational environments, working closely with senior Frequency leaders and embedded client teams.
What success looks like:
We spoke with Steve Wickham, Executive Associate at Frequency’s Wellington office, about what success looks like in this role: “Success, for me, looks like an Associate who genuinely takes ownership of their projects. Someone who understands the client’s drivers, anticipates issues before they become problems, and brings calm structure to complex situations. The Associates who do well here are those who build trust quickly — with clients, contractors and internal teams — and who are willing to lean in, ask good questions, and back themselves while still knowing when to seek support.”
From Frequency’s perspective, success also looks like someone who is actively developing their judgement as a consultant — moving beyond task delivery into contributing to better project outcomes, stronger client relationships, and a positive team environment.
What you’ll focus on:
- Supporting the delivery of projects across infrastructure, buildings, project controls and industrial environments, from early planning through to procurement and delivery
- Coordinating multidisciplinary teams, consultants and contractors to keep projects moving
- Managing day‑to‑day project requirements under senior oversight, including programme, cost, risk and reporting
- Engaging directly with clients and stakeholders, building trusted relationships
- Contributing to procurement processes and contract administration
- Identifying risks and issues early, and helping develop practical, workable solutions
- Maintaining strong health and safety, quality and governance practices
- Supporting and learning from senior team members, while actively developing your own capability
What sets you up for success:
- Around 4–7+ years’ experience in project delivery within New Zealand
- Experience across one or more of: civil infrastructure, vertical buildings, or live operational / industrial environments
- A technical background in engineering, construction, building services, or strong contractor‑side experience
- Familiarity with NZ procurement processes and contracts (e.g. NZS 3910 / 3916), or a willingness to grow this capability
- Clear, adaptable communication skills and confidence dealing with a range of stakeholders
- A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset and willingness to take ownership
- Interest in developing as a consultant, not just a project manager
How we work (and how you’ll grow):
We’re office-first, because in-person collaboration accelerates learning, strengthens relationships, and helps us solve problems faster. You’ll generally work between our Wellington office and client or project sites, staying close to the work and the people who matter. Flexibility is supported where it makes sense.
We’re also intentional about development at Frequency. You’ll be supported through structured pathways that build both delivery capability and consulting confidence — with clear expectations at each stage and practical support to help you progress. That includes regular coaching and mentoring from senior leaders, and opportunities to take real ownership as you grow. If you’re keen to develop into a senior consultant and people leader over time, this role is designed to help you get there.
What you’ll get:
- Exposure to a wide range of projects across multiple sectors
- Five weeks’ annual leave
- 4.5% employer KiwiSaver contribution
- Enhanced parental leave for primary carers and partners
- Wellbeing benefit and access to EAP services for you and your whānau
- Ongoing learning and development support, including forums, training budgets and professional memberships
- Regular company connection moments and team events
- The opportunity to grow with a business that’s expanding and invested in its people
If you’re an experienced project professional looking to take the next step with a growing Wellington team, we’d love to hear from you.
