 Adjunct faculty serve as temporary part-time faculty and are appointed as needed on a semester-by-semester basis. The primary responsibility includes teaching of college-level courses and/or labs in the qualified discipline, service and support of college policies and procedures, and professional development.


Hillsborough College is seeking adjunct instructors for the Medical Laboratory Science Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) 4+1 Program.

Adjunct instructors provide didactic and student laboratory education in areas aligned with their professional expertise. Potential instructional areas include hematology and hemostasis, clinical chemistry, immunohematology and transfusion medicine, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis and body fluids, molecular diagnostics, laboratory operations, and other areas of medical laboratory science.

Teaching assignments will be based on program needs and the faculty member's education, professional experience, certification, licensure when applicable, and demonstrated subject-matter expertise. Adjunct instructors are not expected to have expertise across all laboratory disciplines.


Responsibilities

·    Provide didactic and/or laboratory instruction in assigned Medical Laboratory Science courses.

·    Teach laboratory principles, procedures, instrumentation, quality control, troubleshooting, result interpretation, clinical correlation, safety, and professional practice appropriate to the Medical Laboratory Scientist level.

·    Supervise and instruct students performing laboratory exercises and competency activities in the College's Medical Laboratory Science teaching laboratory.

·    Prepare or contribute to lectures, laboratory activities, assessments, case studies, and other instructional materials.

·    Evaluate student academic achievement and laboratory competency.

·    Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.

·    Maintain course and student documentation required by the program and College.

·    Participate as appropriate in curriculum review, program assessment, accreditation activities, and continuous program improvement.

·    Maintain professional competency and participate in professional development related to assigned teaching responsibilities.


Requirements

·    Earned bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a biological or chemical science related to the assigned instructional area.

·    Current national certification at the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (MLS/MT) professional level, either as a generalist or through an appropriate categorical/specialty credential relevant to the assigned instructional discipline, from a certifying organization recognized by the Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel.

·    Minimum of three years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience or experience in clinical laboratory science education in the assigned instructional area.

·    Demonstrated knowledge and professional proficiency in the laboratory content area assigned for instruction.

·    Demonstrated competency and ability to provide effective instruction at the Medical Laboratory Scientist level.


·    Current and valid State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel license appropriate to the assigned instructional discipline.

·    Previous classroom, student laboratory, clinical instruction, preceptor, or professional training experience.

·    Experience as a laboratory trainer, competency assessor, lead technologist, supervisor, or educator.

·    Relevant specialty certification.


Part-time credit-course instructional faculty will be compensated at the rate of $80.00 per instructional point, based on the number assigned load points.  There will be no distinction made for advanced degrees.  If a part-time instructor is absent from his/her class, the number of sessions missed will be deducted from his/her pay on a prorated basis.  (if a class is scheduled to meet 15 times per term and one session is missed by the instructor, 1/15th of his/her salary for the class will be deducted). 


  • One Lecture Credit Hour will generate 10 load points and
  • One Distance Learning Credit Hour will generate 10 load points
  • One Laboratory Contact Hour contact hour will generate 8 load points.
  • One Clinical Contact Hour will generate 8 load points

A three-hour class would generate 30 load points. Multiply those 30 load points times $80.00.  This is the amount paid for teaching the course that semester ($2,400.00).  This is paid bi-weekly throughout the semester.
