Job Description:

The Effective Learning Advisor (ELA) plays a key role within the Empower, Learning and Development (ELD) framework, contributing to the delivery of student success, learning enhancement, and empowerment initiatives. The role supports institutional priorities for student progression, retention, and graduate outcomes through high‑quality student‑facing delivery and coordinated enhancement activities.

Working collaboratively with Schools, Information Services, and institutional stakeholders, the ELA designs and delivers structured learning enhancement initiatives, including workshops, group‑based activities, and targeted interventions aligned with programmes such as Peer‑Assisted Learning, dissertation bootcamps, and the EmPOWER Programme. The role supports the integration of employability development through Impact Statements and Impact Transcript preparation, enabling students to articulate the value and impact of their learning experiences.

The ELA adopts a data‑informed approach to monitoring student engagement and progression, contributing to targeted support and the continuous improvement of learning support services. Operating at an Assistant Manager level, the role combines hands‑on student support with the coordination of enhancement initiatives, contributing to a coherent and accessible learning support environment that empowers students to become confident and independent learners.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Student Learning Support and Skills Development

  • Design, deliver, and evaluate structured learning enhancement initiatives, including workshops, group sessions, and targeted interventions that support students’ academic success and independent learning.

  • Provide group-based and selective individual support to students in areas such as academic writing, critical thinking, exam preparation, time management, note-taking, and reflective learning.

  • Lead and contribute to initiatives aligned with Peer‑Assisted Learning, dissertation bootcamps, and other targeted academic support programmes.

  • Develop, curate, and maintain accessible online and in‑person learning resources that address diverse student needs, learning preferences, and stages of study.

  • Support students in developing effective learning habits and confidence in managing their academic responsibilities.

2. Contribution to Student Development and the EmPOWER Programme

  • Actively support the delivery and continuous enhancement of the EmPOWER Programme, ensuring a positive and coherent student learning experience across programme levels.

  • Embed employability development within learning enhancement activities through the facilitation of Impact Statements and support for Impact Transcript preparation.

  • Work with Domain Leaders and relevant stakeholders to support student engagement, progression, and completion across EmPOWER programme pathways.

  • Promote awareness and uptake of Effective Learning and EmPOWER‑related initiatives through inductions, outreach activities, and targeted communications.

3. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with Schools, Information Services, and professional services teams to coordinate learning enhancement activities and student support initiatives.

  • Maintain effective communication with cross‑campus and global colleagues delivering Effective Learning or EmPOWER‑related activities to ensure alignment and sharing of good practice.

  • Represent Effective Learning in relevant meetings, working groups, or committees related to student experience, learning support, and enhancement, where required.

4. Data, Monitoring, and Student Success Interventions

  • Use participation, engagement, and feedback data to monitor student involvement in learning enhancement activities and identify patterns related to progression and retention.

  • Contribute to data‑informed identification of students who may benefit from additional or targeted support and assist in coordinating timely interventions.

  • Maintain accurate records of student engagement, participation, and outcomes in line with institutional data management and reporting requirements.

5. Evaluation and Continuous Improvement

  • Collect and analyse student feedback to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of learning enhancement initiatives and support services.

  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, summaries, and updates for internal stakeholders to support service improvement and decision‑making.

  • Recommend enhancements to learning support provision based on evaluation findings, emerging student needs, and evolving learning contexts (e.g. digital learning, responsible use of AI).

  • Support effective resource use and service planning activities related to learning enhancement delivery.
