Firefighter-EMT & Firefighter-Paramedic

The Shawnee Fire Department is a dedicated workforce striving for excellence in community safety and emergency services. The Department is an all-hazard emergency and non-emergency services provider with career personnel. The Department is actively accepting applications for Firefighter-EMT and Firefighter-Paramedic. Daily routines include performing tasks related to fire prevention, suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services under conditions frequently involving considerable danger. All interested candidates must submit all of the required application materials as attachments in order to be considered.  Pay for Firefighter-EMT begins at $54,550 and pay for Firefighter-Paramedic begins at $60,005.  The City also offers lateral pay up to $78,646 for Firefighter-EMT and up to $86,510 to Firefighter-Paramedic. 

Position Responsibilities

• Perform tasks related to fire prevention, suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services under conditions frequently involving considerable danger.  Drive or ride in emergency vehicle/apparatus under routine and stressful conditions.  Ensure the general safety of the public.

• Evaluate the condition of patients by questions, observations, or hands-on assessment to determine the type of help needed and the appropriate treatment.  Administer appropriate medical treatment and interventions according to established protocols and guidelines.  Communicate effectively with patients, families, healthcare professionals, and other emergency responders to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.  Complete and maintain accurate records and documentation regarding patient care.

• Inspect and maintain emergency equipment, radios, and other equipment to ensure proper operating condition.  Monitor station, vehicle, and portable radios and respond to fire alarm calls in accordance with standard operating procedures.  Perform general maintenance work related to the upkeep of fire station buildings and fire apparatus.  

• Present and participate in training and in pre-fire analysis by reviewing target hazards within the company district and establishing action to be taken in case of incident.

• Understand the basic functions of City services.  Understand and adhere to City and department bulletins, directives, memorandums, and policies.  

• Conduct fire department tours, business and residential inspections, public education fire prevention programs, demonstrations, and presentations.

• Operate a variety of rescue equipment and tools. Perform emergency rescue services. Remove fire and accident victims to a safe location. Perform post-fire salvage.

• Connect and lay hoses; operate hose nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders.

• Maintain physical fitness and participate in the fire department annual physical.

• Collaborate with others. Maintain the trust and confidence of co-workers, superiors, and the public.

• Ensure adherence to safe work practices. Offer suggestions for improvement.

• Comprehend and apply basic map readings and geographic location skills.  Understand and perform basic computer skills. Understand and perform standard mathematical computations. 

Minimum Qualifications

• High school or general equivalency diploma (GED). 

A Firefighter-EMT must possess the following prior to the expiration date of the eligibility list (12/17/2027):

• Certification under the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and/or Kansas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)*
• Successful completion of the following National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) OR International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certifications though the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute or equally recognized and accredited organization: 
  • Firefighter I
  • Firefighter II
  • HAZMAT Awareness
  • HAZMAT Operations

*Certification as a State of Kansas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced (A) is required by the end date of the internal academy that is conducted post-hire.

A Firefighter-EMT must provide the following at or prior to the Staff Interviews scheduled for December 2, 2026:

• Certified Physical Agility Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months*

*Candidates who are actively employed as a Firefighter must provide proof of a completed CPAT, but it does not have to be from within the past 12 months

A Firefighter-Paramedic must possess all of the above, in addition to:

• Certification as a Paramedic through the State of Kansas.
• Must be credentialed as a paramedic through the Johnson County Office of the Medical Director

Work Schedule

This position is scheduled for shift work based on a 28-day work period that includes a regular pattern of 24-hour shifts. Employees are occasionally required to remain after a normal shift has ended if an emergency exists or if necessary to carry out normal and essential services of the city and is assigned by the supervisor. This position is subject to call in 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist in emergency situations and cover staffing shortages. Other overtime may be required for training and special projects.

Hiring Timeline

The purpose of this application process process is to create an eligibility list for future vacancies that may occur.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year once certified.  Should a candidate be selected to fill a vacancy while on the eligibility list, all above minimum qualifications must be met prior to hire. The 2026/2027 hiring timeline is as follows:

October 21st - Applications close at 5pm
October 26 & October 27 - Initial Interviews
November 2-November 25 - Ride-Along
December 2nd - Staff Interviews
December 16th - Eligibility List Established
