As an HVAC Chiller Mechanic, you will support startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and aftermarket service for commercial HVAC equipment. You will work directly with customers to solve facility inefficiencies, deliver service solutions, and support recommendations that improve system performance. This is a hands-on field role for a skilled technician who takes pride in safety, service quality, and technical problem-solving.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Perform startup, commissioning, and aftermarket service on commercial and/or ducted HVAC systems.
- →Work on air-cooled and/or water-cooled chillers, air handling units (AHUs), and rooftop ducted units.
- →Troubleshoot and repair HVAC and mechanical system issues, including centrifugal compressors, steam turbines, and screw chiller system components.
- →Support customers by identifying facility inefficiencies and resolving service-related items.
- →Provide solutions and outcomes during commissioning and aftermarket service.
- →Recommend efficiency improvements and identify upselling opportunities where appropriate.
- →Prepare quotes to support recommendations and service solutions.
- →Document customer issues, causes, and corrective actions clearly and professionally.
- →Collaborate with local market mechanics and branch team members to support customer needs.
- →Participate in training and knowledge-building activities to strengthen product and service expertise.
- Own the work with accountability, safety, and integrity in every service visit, startup, and customer interaction.
- Stay close to the equipment and the customer’s needs so you can quickly identify root causes and remove obstacles to performance.
- Approach each job with a continuous improvement mindset, using clear problem-solving, candid communication, and disciplined follow-through.
- Work as one team with branch mechanics, leaders, and customers by sharing knowledge, supporting others, and valuing different perspectives.
- Use your technical judgment to diagnose issues, explain findings clearly, and deliver practical solutions that support long-term system reliability.
- Leverage training through Johnson Controls’ Service Technical Academy (STA) to build product knowledge, strengthen service capability, and support career growth.
Requirements
~1 min read- Minimum of three (3) years of practical working experience on commercial and/or ducted products, air-cooled and/or water-cooled chillers, AHUs, or rooftop ducted units.
- Strong HVAC and mechanical troubleshooting experience.
- Ability to repair centrifugal compressors, steam turbines, and screw chiller system components.
- Must be a member of, or willing to join, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States
- Universal EPA refrigerants license.
- Applicable state or local licensing.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Willingness to travel during the first six months for training.
- Ability to travel 10% to 20% to support branch customers with startup, commissioning, and aftermarket service troubleshooting.
- Willingness to enroll in training programs and pass a knowledge examination to assess proficiencies.
- Strong attention to detail and effective interpersonal, digital, and written communication skills.
- Ability to write and communicate customer problems, causes, and corrective actions clearly.
- Self-starter with a desire to learn and apply new skills on the job.
- Commitment to prioritizing safety in all forms.
- Must have a valid driver's license
