POSITION DUTIES

A Correctional Officer II is the full performance level of work in the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates confined in a correctional facility. Employees in this classification receive close supervision and do not supervise other correctional officers. Correctional officers may be assigned to morning or evening shifts.\r\n\r\n\r\n Facilitate the transportation of Incarcerated Individuals to and from medical appointments statewide.\r\n Exercise care, custody and control over incarcerated individuals.\r\n Administer emergency medical assistance to both incarcerated individuals and staff.\r\n Perform physically demanding tasks e.g. running, physical control of incarcerated individuals, lifting.\r\n Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with incarcerated individuals and staff.\r\n Analyze situations and problems and provide appropriate solutions.\r\n Provides advice and guidance in assisting incarcerated individuals in their adjustment to institutional rules and regulations.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� High School diploma or\r\nhigh school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of\r\nEducation as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.\r\n\r\nExperience: One year of experience as a correctional officer involving\r\nthe custody and security of adult inmates.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNote: The above educational requirement is set by the Correctional\r\nTraining Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section\r\n8-209.\r\n

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to retired State of Maryland or retired Maryland Municipal/County Correctional Officers who are eligible for recertification with the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n2. Employees in this classification may be required to operate buses for the transportation of incarcerated individuals. Employees assigned such duties will be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsements valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees must meet the\r\nselection standards required and successfully completed the recertification training prescribed\r\nby the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer\r\nduring their probationary period (Correctional Services Article, Section\r\n8-209). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in\r\ndetail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01\r\nand include the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status\r\n \r\n Must be at least 21 years of age\r\n \r\n A completed background investigation (Inclusive of a polygraph)\r\n \r\n Oral interview\r\n \r\n Physical examination\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on\r\nor after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms\r\nTraining prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission (Code\r\nof Maryland 12.10.04.04 and 12.10.04.05) and demonstrate practical knowledge\r\nand proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.\r\n3. Employees in this classification are subject to\r\nsubstance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations\r\n17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.\r\n

Including but not limited to driving under the influence,\r\ndriving while intoxicated, attempting to flee/ elude police and/or driving\r\nwhile license is refused / suspended / revoked /canceled.\r\n�\r\nAcademy - Must\r\nmeet the guidelines for certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional\r\nTraining Commission.\r\n�\r\nMilitary records - No\r\nseparations less than honorable.\r\n

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\r\n\r\nLeave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\r\n
