FACULTY MSD - Substitute Teacher (Contractual Position)

Introduction

Anticipated openings for the 2026-2027 School Year (September 2026 - January 2027).\r\n�\r\nThe Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive,\r\nlanguage-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth\r\nthrough age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access\r\nto American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic,\r\nextracurricular, and student life programs. Main Purpose of Job

Substitute teaching assignments may change based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials, but rather make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the most positive way possible.\r\n

POSITION DUTIES

Follow the lesson plan left\r\nby the teacher and ensure students complete all assigned tasks, maintain a safe\r\nenvironment, keep students under direct supervision at all times, leave\r\ninformation concerning the day's activities for the teacher, and maintain strict\r\nconfidentiality of students and school personnel information.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma, plus 60 college credits, or a\r\nverified former Howard County teacher.\r\n�\r\nFluency in American Sign Language and written English\r\nrequired.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree\r\npreferred. Experience working with a diverse student population including\r\nunderserved students, strong classroom management skills, and knowledge of the\r\nDeaf Community preferred.\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background\r\ninvestigation at their own expense.� (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1,\r\nSections 5-560-568)\r\n�\r\nCandidates will need to provide three letters of\r\nrecommendation.\r\n

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

Please note that all\r\ncontractual agreements and staffing allocations are subject to adjustment based\r\non student enrollment and operational needs.\r\n

BENEFITS

\r\nContractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\r\nLeave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\r\n\r\n
