Land and Materials Administration�\r\nVoluntary Cleanup Program\r\n1800 Washington Blvd.�\r\nBaltimore, MD 21230\r\n

Main Purpose of Job

The Geologist\r\nLead will review and evaluate conditions of known or suspected contamination to\r\ndetermine the extent remediation needed and oversee remediation activities at\r\npotential Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) / Controlled Hazardous Substances\r\n(CSH) sites. The incumbent in this position will review the work of highly\r\ntrained and experienced consultants and must independently evaluate their work.\r\nThe incumbent will determine the potential public health and safety impacts of\r\nhazardous materials in the environment and in drinking water supplies. The Geologist\r\nLead will also assign work, lead, and coach/mentor junior staff.\r\n�\r\nThe working conditions of this position may involve:\r\n�\r\nExposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. \r\n�\r\nThe employee may be required to visit sites containing\r\nchemical and physical hazards ( e.g., old landfills, former spill areas,\r\ndilapidated buildings).\r\n�\r\nExposure to hazardous conditions, which may result in injury.��\r\n�\r\nSpecial physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more,\r\n�\r\nUse of protective equipment such as googles, gloves, mask, etc.\r\n�\r\nThe incumbent in this position will be required to\r\ndrive a State vehicle. If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you\r\nmust provide a certified copy of your driving record for the appropriate Motor\r\nVehicle Administration at the time of appointment. Individuals must maintain a\r\ndriver's license with no more than five points on their driving record in order to\r\ndrive a State vehicle.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science. \r\nExperience: Five years of experience performing professional geological work.\r\nNotes:\r\n1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science�for the required education and one year of the required experience.\r\n2.�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service�experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a�commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical�science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n Experience reviewing Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.\r\n Experience reviewing Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.\r\n Familiar with Environmental law and regulations.\r\n\r\n\r\n

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal�Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment. \r\n2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. \r\n3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r\n
