Canteen Assistant

The Canteen Assistant works closely with the Canteen Supervisor and Chefs to deliver an exceptional service and nutritional food experience within the schools.

The Canteen Assistant will assist in the preparation of food, whilst maintaining the highest sanitization standards and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for students and faculty. They will also assist in the daily operation by operating the POS system and serving the students, in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

Food Preparation
• Assist in ensuring school meals are provided on time and that adequate quantities are available.
• Assist Cooks with food prep and prepare daily cold items and snack items.
• Prepare all food according to strict guidelines.
• Maintain a safe work environment.
Service
• Work as a team to provide efficient service and good flow in the service area.
• Operate the POS systems and cashiering in a proficient manner.
• Adhere to correct portions and nutritional requirements and serve students in a friendly and polite manner.
Sanitation and Hygiene
• Keep the work area clean and use the correct utensils and kitchen equipment.
• Ensure all utensils, cookware, dishes, cups and glassware are clean and sanitary.
• Keep equipment, fridges, ovens, work surfaces and floors clean and sanitary.
• Remove the garbage in a timely manner and ensure nothing is lying around.
• Help to maintain the kitchen and cleaning supplies inventory.
• Maintain high standards of hygiene and sanitation, whilst complying with Department of Environmental Health requirements.
• Adhere to MEP’s school uniform policy e.g the right clothing, jewelry, personal hygiene, hair and nails.
Kitchen Equipment
• Help to maintain kitchen and equipment. Notify the Supervisor immediately regarding faulty equipment
• Ensure all equipment and utensils are stored in their correct place.
Customer Service and Teamwork
• Provide excellent customer service to the students and staff, in a professional manner.
• Work collaboratively with the supervisors and kitchen staff to ensure all work is completed, including washing dishes.
• Act as an ambassador for MEP.

Key Qualifications and Skills

• Basic food and hygiene knowledge. Certification is an advantage.
• Some experience in a commercial or fast paced kitchen is an advantage.
• Be able to multitask and work under pressure in a fast past environment, while maintaining quality service.
• Have exceptional time management skills.
• Be able to work as part of a team with a positive attitude.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
• Be able to take and follow instructions.
• Use initiative, priorities tasks and work efficiently, without constant supervision.
• Must have stamina as the job requires the ability to stand on feet for long periods of time.
• Be able to lift 50lbs.
• Must be fully literate in English (both written and oral) to read and understand items such as instructions, warning labels on chemicals, equipment manuals.
• Have excellent personal hygiene and have a good working knowledge of hygienic food handling.
• Ability to remain calm and professional, especially when dealing with children.
• Happy to work in an environment which can be noisy at times, with hot surface, chemicals and solvents.
