We advance this mission through programming focused on conserving wildlife, restoring habitat and waterways, expanding outdoor opportunities, connecting children with nature, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change. 

To grow our and sustain our digital footprint, we are seeking a Director of Digital Content to lead the strategy, creation, and management of the organization's digital presence across the National Wildlife Federation’s major organic web and social properties, including NWF.org, associated microsites, the NWF Blog, and the Federation’s flagship social media accounts. This senior role is responsible for developing a coherent content vision that advances organizational goals, deepens audience engagement, and strengthens the brand. This position oversees a team of content creators and collaborates closely with teams across fundraising, advocacy, communications, and technology.

The Director works closely with the Director of Digital Growth and Transformation, Director of Digital Fundraising and Engagement, and also coordinates closely with our Membership Program (offline fundraising) to ensure a cohesive donor experience and a full-funnel approach to supporter development. The position reports to the Associate Vice President for Digital Engagement who sets and oversees the organization’s digital strategy for fundraising, advocacy, marketing, and communications.

The Director’s role is comprised of these major areas of responsibility and focus:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive digital content strategy across the federation’s web properties including NWF.org, related microsites, the federation’s blog, and flagship social media accounts.
  • Leads a content creation team to develop social media content, blog posts, and website copy to support the Federation’s marketing, revenue, advocacy, and programmatic goals.
  • Establish and maintain cohesive brand guidelines on web properties, ensuring consistency in tone, messaging, and visual identity across all digital channels, and deliver effective, audience-centric content. Build and manage an integrated editorial calendar across all digital channels
  • Collaborates with national, regional, and affiliate partners to support the Federation’s conservation priorities. Builds effective working relationships across the Federation and serves as a knowledgeable and accessible resource about how web content and social media can support relevant outcomes.
  • Working with the Digital Analyst and the Data Strategy team, analyzes performance metrics and monitors progress toward goals, fine-tuning strategies as necessary. Evaluates the effectiveness of campaign strategies and uses these insights to inform continuous improvement. Promotes data-driven decision making.
  • Partner closely with other leads on Digital Engagement, other teams in Development, and relevant teams across the organization to develop content that supports organizational goals
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in digital content, editorial, or content marketing roles at a large multi-faceted nonprofit organization, political campaigns or operations, an agency, or corporate setting
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing multi-channel content strategies
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills; able to communicate complex ideas accessibly
  • Deep familiarity with major social media platforms and current best practices
  • Experience with CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Drupal, or similar) and basic SEO principles
  • Proficiency with web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Looker Studio) and social media management platforms
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in a nonprofit, advocacy, or mission-driven organization
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms and how content strategy intersects with email and fundraising
  • Working knowledge of paid social and content distribution strategies
  • Experience with accessibility standards and inclusive content design
  • Background in or exposure to digital fundraising or advocacy campaigns
  • Passion for the preservation and protection of wildlife and wild places is highly desirable. Experience in environmental conservation a plus

Occasional overnight travel for teamwide functions, professional development, or vendor relations or sales shows.

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example, using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about the workspace. The position requires mobility, including moving materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000, commensurate with experience.
