Starting Salary: $27.00-$35.00/hour
The Opportunity
The Environmental Specialist Intern supports the Compliance Assurance (CA) program to help ensure alignment with regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will contribute to regulatory readiness activities through audit coordination, tracking compliance actions, communication of regulatory changes, and oversight of the fenceline monitoring program in accordance with federal regulations. The role also provides support to environmental regulatory programs, including compliance stack testing, waste management, and other areas as required. This role provides the opportunity to gain experience in environmental compliance, regulatory readiness, and environmental regulatory programs.
Responsibilities
- Support the Compliance Assurance (CA) program and maintain alignment with regulatory requirements and internal compliance expectations.
- Maintain and update the Compliance Assurance database and track compliance actions to support timely completion.
- Support Compliance Assurance activities, including sponsor/advisor meetings, Continuous Improvement Plans (CIP), and Compliance Committee meetings.
- Monitor Provincial and Federal regulatory changes and communicate updates to support compliance processes.
- Support environmental regulatory reporting and the implementation of regulatory requirements, as required.
- Support the refinery's fenceline monitoring program in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate fenceline monitoring activities, including sample collection, laboratory analysis, and data reporting.
- Maintain the annual audit plan and track audit findings, corrective actions, and completion status.
- Support waste management activities, including invoicing, documentation, reporting, and compliance with waste management plans.
Education
- Currently enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
- Preference will be given to students in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of study with one academic term remaining following the completion of the work term.
Requirements
- Available for a 12 or 16-month work term beginning January 2027.
- Self-starter with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and follow up on action items.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Comfortable supporting administrative and program management activities, including maintaining records and tracking tasks.
- Ability to review, analyze, and communicate regulatory and compliance-related information.
- Strong computer skills and proficiency using computer applications and systems.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including time spent in an industrial setting.
