Pivot Energy is seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to join our team as Vice President (VP) of Market Strategy. The VP of Market Strategy is responsible for setting the policy strategy, market strategy, and accompanying goals for the markets in which Pivot participates, and then leading those outcomes.  Key areas of management include market analysis, generating go-to-market plans, policy tracking and influencing, and executive sponsorship of select high-value opportunities.

The VP will deliver these outcomes by building, leading, and developing a high-performing team of market strategy, policy, and market development professionals: setting priorities, allocating resources, and holding the team accountable to clear goals. Success in the role will be defined by identifying and maintaining solar, small utility, and BESS markets while maintaining and increasing Pivot’s market share in those markets. This will involve balancing resources across teams to both enter and exit markets to optimize our market mix and resources. This role is ultimately accountable for the team's preparation of and response to procurements within qualifying markets using innovative strategies to secure capacity.

The role demands deep understanding of distributed energy resource market policy, wholesale market constructs, legislative & regulatory processes, site origination techniques, equipment and technology usages, modeling and rate analysis fluency,  and working across teams to create healthy development environments for company growth. The role also requires the ability to lead executive-level discussions. This is a people-leadership position: the VP will spend the majority of their time setting direction for, coaching, and developing the teams. The role requires a kind, attentive focus to guide team members and work collaboratively across teams.

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team of market strategy, policy, and market development professionals, including goal setting, decision making, performance management, and career development.
  • Set team priorities, allocate resources across markets, and help achieve market development goals.
  • Delegate the flow of activity and workload for market analysis, modeling, and policy engagement to team members, engaging directly the most strategic opportunities.
  • Serve as a member of Pivot's leadership team, partnering with the CCO and other executives on company strategy, annual planning, and the Market Strategy & Policy budget.
  • Set site origination strategies based on policy, internal and external research, company goals, and resource balancing.
  • Effectively communicate strategies for active and emerging markets to multiple stakeholders, including the CCO and executive leadership.
  • Oversee the team's usage and interpretation of financial and energy models, and use their outputs to understand key market drivers and guide wise decision making.  Direct market research and the team's creation and delivery of initial proof-of-concept deals and strategies.
  • Lead the team in researching, preparing for, responding to, and winning energy and capacity procurements to continue to grow our market share and expand our pipeline. This could be via RFPs, direct negotiations, or other program constructs to secure capacity with utilities.
  • Manage and work closely with our policy team to actively monitor regulatory and legislative changes that will change or create markets and bring forward proposals to enter new markets in a timely and successful manner.
  • Coordinate project development strategy and pipeline to match commercial client demand in timing, volume, and location. Guide the team in identifying and creating new product and offtake concepts that address client demand and then aim to match our pipeline with offtakers.
  • In collaboration with other department leads such as engineering, origination, finance, and delivery- ensure clear direction and responsibilities are communicated across team members throughout project life cycles.
  • Ensure the team's timely and accurate use of all CRM and other data systems.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of materials, reports, presentations and other communications which document market strategy and keep leadership and employees up-to-date.
  • Deep familiarity with the legislative and regulatory structures that affect our industry. Experience working directly with industry trade-groups and other policy makers to create and defend renewable energy policy
  • Experience and general fluency with financial models, energy models, and project development  processes that propel or constrain solar and storage markets, and the ability to translate that knowledge into action.
  • A proven track record of leading successful entry into new markets, with a rigorous approach to gathering and assessing market data.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success building and leading teams of individual contributors, including 5+ years of direct people-management experience, with a high priority on listening, coaching, synergizing, and driving action.
  • A collaborative approach that drives engagement and spurs creativity from team members.
  • Executive-level judgment, including experience setting departmental goals, managing budgets and headcount, and making resource-allocation decisions across competing priorities.
  • Confidence in building relationships and driving high-value conversations with external partners, including policymakers, large property owners, utilities, and commercial clients.
  • 10+ years of experience working in renewable energy development, including experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and managing managers. Distributed generation experience in both solar and energy storage.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to visit team members, attend conferences, and build relationships with external partners. Approximately once per month If remote. Several times per year if based at our Denver HQ.
  • Understanding of solar and storage structured finance, financial drivers, and rate concepts
  • Experience implementing stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Competency in Salesforce, Microsoft Office Suite, and experience and willingness to leverage AI.
