Mid-Level Industrial Designer - Assistive Tech / Medical Devices

A leading social enterprise in Southern Africa, renowned for manufacturing pediatric wheelchairs and adaptive posture support products, is seeking a Mid-Level Industrial Designer to join its Cape Town-based product development team. Operating within an evidence-based, user-centred design framework, the organisation collaborates closely with clinical specialists, external suppliers, and an experienced internal assembly team to take rugged, locally appropriate assistive technologies from initial concept through to field testing and production. In this hands-on technical role, the successful candidate will work under the supervision and mentorship of the Head of Design, supporting a broad spectrum of product improvement, customisation, and documentation tasks. Working hours are standard full-time office/workshop hours, with occasional requirements to accompany clinical personnel on field trials and clinic visits. Key Responsibilities: Executing design improvements and custom modifications for existing mobility and posture support devices. Developing comprehensive 3D models, sheet metal components, and detailed technical production drawings for suppliers and assembly personnel. Authoring clear technical assembly instructions, user manuals, and technical documentation. Maintaining design department records in compliance with the organization's Quality Management System (QMS). Participating in field testing, clinical evaluations, and clinic site visits alongside clinical specialists to observe product performance firsthand. Partnering with internal production, upholstery, and fabrication teams to maintain product quality and optimise manufacturing efficiency. Collaborating with external supplier networks during prototyping and component manufacturing stages. Requirements Tertiary qualification (Diploma or Degree) in Industrial Design or an equivalent field. 4 to 6 years of practical experience in industrial design within a technical or manufacturing environment. Solid hands-on workshop experience, with proven ability to operate workshop tools safely and accurately. Demonstrated proficiency in English, both written and spoken. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Proven problem-solving capability across multiple mediums (verbal, sketch, and physical prototype). Strong attention to detail, personal integrity, and a proactive, inquisitive approach to continuous learning. Preferred Qualifications: Functional working knowledge or exposure to basic electronics.
