Technical Tools
Finance & AccountingAccountant

Our client is a US East Coast specialty contractor working on commercial, institutional, and government construction projects. They are hiring one accountant to own the accounting function end to end: the daily transaction work, the monthly close, the receivables, the construction-specific reporting, and the compliance filings that come with working on public and commercial projects.

This is not a dataentry seat, and it is not a piece of a larger accounting team. You are the person who makes sure the books are right, the statements go out on the first, retainage is tracked across every live project, and the certified payroll and project reports are filed accurately and on time. The owner will read the reports you produce and make decisions from them.

It also takes a particular kind of person. Alongside the technical work, you will occasionally pick up the phone and speak with a customer about an overdue balance—these are existing relationships, so the conversation has to collect the money and keep the relationship intact. If you are precise with numbers and warm with people, this role was written for you.

Responsibilities

~1 min read
  • Import and categorize weekly transactions from credit cards and bank accounts in QuickBooks
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations to ensure all accounts are accurate and balanced.
  • Record adjusting journal entries for prepayment accounts, including insurance, vehicle payments, and other recurring items
  • Record checks received in QuickBooks accurately and in a timely manner

  • Prepare month-end financial reports, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets
  • Ensure all accounts are reconciled and entries are complete before month-end close.

  • Handle collections correspondence via email and phone, following up professionally and persistently on overdue balances
  • Occasionally make direct outbound calls to clients on unpaid invoices—a warm, personable phone manner matters, because these are existing client relationships

  • Process and verify lien waivers once received from customers, confirming balances and verifying correct amounts for requisitions being released

  • Assist with annual insurance audits, including workers' compensation and general liability
