The HSSE Assurance Advisor is responsible for on-the-ground safety assurance, risk identification, and real-time mitigation across all retail, maintenance, and construction sites in Texas, New Mexico, and other U.S. operations.

This role serves as the second line of defense, ensuring that operational activities are conducted safely, risks are controlled effectively, and company and regulatory requirements are consistently met.

The position requires a high level of field presence (defined by workload), strong decision-making capability, and the ability to intervene decisively to prevent incidents and protect people, assets, and the business.

1. → Independent Risk Assurance (Second Line Function)

• →Act as an independent verifier of HSSE performance in the field, ensuring that operational risks are properly identified, managed, and closed by Territory Managers.
• →Conduct structured field assessments and evaluate the quality, completeness, and timeliness of:
• →Incident reporting
• →Action plan development
• →Corrective action closure
• →Provide clear, documented feedback on gaps, inconsistencies, or risks identified.
• →Escalate systemic issues, repeated non-compliance, or high-risk exposures to HSSE leadership.

1. → On-site Engagement & Risk-Based Influence (Non-Training Role)

• →Build strong working relationships with Territory Managers and Site Managers to enable open, constructive challenge on safety matters.
• →Reinforce HSSE expectations through field observations, questioning, and feedback, not through formal training delivery.
• →Use site visits to:
• →Validate understanding of expectations.
• →Identify gaps in execution.
• →Drive accountability through visibility and follow-up.
• →Strengthen field teams’ ownership of safety outcomes.

1. Risk Identification & Mitigation Oversight

• Identify recurring hazards, operational gaps, and exposure trends during assurance activities.
• Challenge the adequacy of proposed mitigations and ensure they are appropriate for the level of risk.
• Provide recommendations and support where needed, partnering with teams to drive implementation, while maintaining clear ownership within operations; except in cases of immediate risk requiring urgent intervention.
• Verify that mitigation measures:
• Are effectively implemented by Operations.
• Remain sustainable over time.
• Document and communicate findings to drive continuous improvement across sites.

1. Data Integrity, Reporting & Assurance Insights

• Verify that incident data, action plans, and safety reports are:
• Accurate
• Complete
• Submitted in a timely manner
• Conduct periodic reviews of tracking tools (e.g., incident logs, action trackers) to ensure data integrity.
• Provide independent insights and trend analysis based on verified data.
• Highlight:
• Data gaps
• Reporting inconsistencies
• Emerging risks
• Ensure visibility to HSSE leadership without assuming ownership of data entry or reporting processes.

1. Regulatory Compliance & Audit Readiness

• Verify that sites comply with OSHA, fire code, and internal HSSE standards.
• Assess site readiness for regulatory inspections and internal audits.
• Identify compliance gaps and formally communicate required corrective actions to Operations.
• Follow up to confirm closure, maintaining clear accountability with Territory Managers.
• Support audits as a subject matter verifier.

1. Field Presence & Risk-Based Prioritization

• Maintain a strong field presence, prioritizing visits based on:
• Incident trends
• High-risk locations
• Operational complexity
• Conduct assurance visits with a focus on:
• Verifying execution
• Challenging inconsistencies
• Identifying risk exposure
• Provide structured feedback after visits, including:
• Key observations
• Required actions
• Follow-up expectations
• Escalate unresolved or recurring issues as needed.

• Strong interpersonal and rapport-building skills, with the ability to coach and influence at all levels.

• Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision.

• 2+ years of experience in HSSE, preferably in retail or field operations.
• Strong understanding of OSHA principles and basic regulatory compliance.
• Experience conducting field inspections, safety walks, or assurance activities.
• Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and ability to learn new systems.
• CPR/AED certification (preferred).
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively.
