A private hospital in the Cape Winelands is looking for an energetic psychiatrist to join its growing psychiatric unit and establish a private practice on campus. You will work alongside other psychiatrists and build your own caseload as the unit expands, in a supportive hospital setting rather than starting from scratch on your own.
You will see patients in your own consulting rooms and care for them at the hospital, working alongside other psychiatrists in the unit, GPs, physicians, other specialists and the hospital's nursing and allied health teams. The Winelands offers a close community, a growing demand for mental health services, and a lifestyle that is hard to match.
Key responsibilities
- Run your own private psychiatric practice, with consultations, assessments, diagnosis and ongoing care for adult patients (and other age groups within your training and interest).
- Admit and manage patients at the hospital, including ward rounds, inpatient reviews and discharge planning, in line with the hospital's facilities and approvals.
- Treat a broad range of conditions, including mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, psychotic and bipolar disorders, and co-occurring substance use.
- Prescribe and monitor psychiatric medication safely, and use other evidence-based treatments within your training and the facilities available.
- Assess and manage risk, including suicidal ideation, self-harm and acute deterioration, and arrange the right level of care.
- Work with psychologists, social workers, nurses, GPs and other professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Practise in line with HPCSA ethical rules, the Mental Health Care Act and hospital clinical governance requirements, with accurate and confidential records.
- Take part in after-hours and on-call arrangements, shared fairly with colleagues.
