Student Engagement & Leadership - Student Leadership & Service
The Department of Student Leadership & Service advances student learning, belonging, and civic responsibility by providing comprehensive leadership development and engagement opportunities that prepare students to lead lives of purpose and impact. The department supports students across the full co-curricular lifecycle through student employment and supervision, leadership education, peer mentorship, community service and volunteerism, and fraternity and sorority life.
Grounded in the University of Denver’s 4D Experience, Student Leadership & Service fosters inclusive communities, ethical leadership, and socially responsible action. The department collaborates broadly across campus and with community partners to help students translate involvement into meaningful learning, preparation for post-graduate success, and sustained connection to the DU community.
Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) provides operational leadership for fraternity and sorority life within a comprehensive leadership and engagement department that includes student employment, leadership development, peer mentorship, community service and volunteerism, and fraternity and sorority life.
Reporting to the Director of Student Leadership & Service, this position oversees the day-to-day and long-term operations of Fraternity & Sorority Life, including advising governing councils and chapters, supervising professional and graduate staff, and leading community-wide education, leadership development, and accountability efforts. The Assistant Director serves as a highly visible and accessible leader who partners with students, advisors, campus colleagues, and national organizations to support a values-based, inclusive, and developmentally focused FSL experience.
The Assistant Director also contributes to department-wide initiatives related to student leadership development, peer education and mentorship, student employment learning outcomes, and service-based engagement. This role plays a key integrative function—ensuring fraternity and sorority life meaningfully aligns with broader departmental learning goals and the University’s 4D Experience.

Essential Functions
Fraternity & Sorority Life Leadership & Strategy
- Provide leadership for the Fraternity & Sorority Life community, overseeing chapter and council operations, recruitment and intake processes, community standards, and long term strategic planning aligned with departmental leadership and service goals.
Student Advising, Leadership Development & Education
- Advise FSL governing councils, chapter leaders, and advisors while leading leadership development, student centered education, and values based training that integrates peer mentorship, student employment learning outcomes, and service oriented leadership practices.
Risk Management, Accountability & Crisis Response
- Lead community wide risk management, behavioral accountability, and crisis response in partnership with campus stakeholders; support students and organizations through incident response, CARE processes, and policy education to promote safety, wellbeing, and responsibility.
Supervision, Staff Development & Operations
- Graduate staff supporting FSL; manage budgets, assessment, data reporting, and operational systems; and ensure effective onboarding, training, and evaluation of staff and student leaders.
Departmental Integration, Partnerships & Assessment
- Collaborate across the Department of Leadership & Service to align FSL with student employment, peer mentorship, and community service initiatives; engage campus and external partners; and assess outcomes to continuously enhance leadership learning and community impact.
- Advanced knowledge of fraternity and sorority life administration, governance structures, recruitment and intake practices, and national organizational policies.
- Strong understanding of student leadership development theory, community standards, and values‑based education, with the ability to integrate service, peer mentorship, and student employment learning outcomes into FSL experiences.
- Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor student leaders, chapter advisors, and governing councils with professionalism, cultural competence, and sound judgment.
- Expertise in risk management, behavioral accountability processes, and crisis response within a higher education setting.
- Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills, including the ability to present effectively to diverse audiences and navigate complex situations with diplomacy.
- Proven ability to supervise, develop, and motivate professional and graduate staff and collaborate across departments and external partners.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills, with experience managing budgets, assessment efforts, and multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to DU’s values.
Requirements
~1 min read- Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Leadership Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in fraternity and sorority life, student leadership development, or closely related student affairs areas.
- Demonstrated experience advising fraternities and sororities, governing councils, or large student organizations.
- Experience leading leadership development, education, and training initiatives for students.
- Experience with supervision of professional and/or graduate staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to student-centered practice and inclusive community development.
- 5+ years of professional experience in fraternity and sorority life or a comprehensive leadership and engagement department.
- Experience working within an integrated leadership and service model that includes student employment, peer mentorship, or community service and volunteerism.
- Experience with strategic planning, program assessment, and accreditation or chapter review processes.

This position requires employees to work onsite 8:00am-4:30pm with occasional evening, weekends, and holiday shifts. (Schedules vary by department and position.) Staff are expected to support student Hallmark, Tradition and other program events throughout the year.
The University of Denver and Student Affairs recognize the utilization of flexible work arrangements where these arrangements are operationally appropriate, and supervisor approved.
Working Environment: Standard office environment, unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high, noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities: Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time, occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
