About

The Dalhousie Student Union (“the Union”) is a democratic union that represents and organizes the 20,000+ students at Dalhousie University. The Union (1) directs its advocacy priorities to fight for student interests, (2) supports and empowers student leaders to make change in their environment, and (3) provides services and grants to support students in their academic and social lives.

In pursuit of these objectives, the Union has a governance structure consisting of a Council of elected representatives from different University faculties and student communities, plus 4 executive officers that coordinate the execution of the Union’s responsibilities to students and its day-to-day operations. The President is one such executive officer that acts as the spokesperson of the Union, is responsible for upholding governance within the Union, represents the general membership, and ensures the effective functioning of the Union. This Commissioner is a role specific to providing administrative and logistical support to the President in carrying out their work. Further details can be found below.

Reporting

During the first four weeks in the role, there will be short (~15mins) daily meetings with the President. These are meant to be meetings to carry out onboarding tasks, answer any questions related to your work, and build a strong working relationship with the President.

After the first four weeks, there will be synchronous meetings on the Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of each week, to the same purpose.

Additionally, there will be monthly check-ins between you and the President to discuss how you can be further supported in your work and this can serve as an opportunity to share feedback.

The Dalhousie Student Union welcomes the contributions that individuals from traditionally marginalized communities, as outlined under the prohibited grounds for discrimination in the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, bring to our organization. Marginalized communities include racialized people; Indigenous people; women; lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender and queer people; and people with disabilities. We encourage applicants to self-identify in their cover letter or application if they are a member of a marginalized community.
