Pitcairn’s innovative Shared Single-Family Office ® model provides unparalleled service to wealthy families and other family offices. Since the firm’s founding in 1923, Pitcairn has helped ultra-high-net-worth families and its members navigate the individual, interpersonal, and institutional challenges that come with wealth. We understand multigenerational family wealth in a way that few other wealth advisory firms do. Our comprehensive family office services include investment advisory, tax, trust and estate planning, risk management, philanthropy, household-level financial services as well as family education and family governance support.

Pitcairn seeks a hands-on Tax Manager to lead tax compliance execution and staff development while contributing to sophisticated tax planning and consulting for ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, trusts, and closely held entities. This player-coach role combines technical expertise, thoughtful client service, and operational leadership with the opportunity to identify planning needs, collaborate with multidisciplinary advisors, and grow beyond traditional tax return preparation.

  • →Manage workflow and completion of complex or sensitive federal and state returns; prepare selected returns and perform first-level technical reviews of Forms 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120 and 1120-S, including workpapers and related state filings.
  • →Review K-1 reporting, investment income, capital gains, basis and loss limitations, trust distributions, multistate matters, estimated taxes and extensions; resolve discrepancies and escalate significant technical issues.
  • →Ensure returns are accurate, well documented, timely and ready for final review; support tax projections, notices and technical research as needed.
  • Identify potential tax planning opportunities and issues through return review, financial information and ongoing client activity; bring observations and recommendations to tax leadership and advisory teams.
  • Assist with tax planning and consulting projects, including multiyear projections, estimated tax strategies, charitable giving, trust and estate-related tax considerations, and closely held business transactions, as appropriate to experience.
  • Collaborate with relationship managers and investment, fiduciary and other advisors to translate complex tax information into practical, coordinated client recommendations.
  • Directly supervise, coach and develop tax preparers and support staff; assign work, balance capacity, provide actionable review notes and assess performance.
  • Own the annual compliance calendar and workflow from organizers and document requests through preparation, review, e-filing and delivery; track open items, deadlines and return status.
  • Coordinate collection of K-1s and other client documents, data extraction, imports and workpaper assembly; step in personally during peak periods.
  • Work across relationship management, fiduciary, investment and accounting teams to resolve bottlenecks and proactively address incomplete information.
  • Use and optimize UltraTax CS, SurePrep, TaxCaddy and related workflow and document management tools; train staff on consistent, effective practices.
  • Standardize checklists, review practices and workpapers; improve automation, data quality, turnaround times and visibility into workload and deadlines.
  • Monitor practical performance measures, including review cycle time, open items and rework; recommend improvements to tax leadership.

Requirements

~1 min read
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; CPA or Enrolled Agent strongly preferred.
  • Approximately 5–8+ years of progressive tax experience, including complex return preparation, first-level review and staff supervision; HNW/UHNW or family office experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of individual, fiduciary, partnership and corporate taxation, including multistate compliance and interconnected family structures.
  • Hands-on proficiency with UltraTax CS or comparable software; familiarity with SurePrep, TaxCaddy, Excel and digital tax workflows strongly preferred.
  • Sound technical judgment, curiosity, initiative and a proactive mindset for recognizing planning opportunities; strong organization, communication, discretion and coaching skills.

Success means delivering high-quality, timely tax compliance; developing a confident, well-supported team; improving processes and technology adoption; and building trusted relationships across Pitcairn. Equally important is looking beyond the return—recognizing tax planning opportunities, raising thoughtful questions, and contributing to proactive, integrated advice for families and their advisors.
