The role is responsible for setting up, processing and checking material accurately and efficiently, while meeting production requirements and maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and housekeeping.

  • Operate the industrial saw and drill safely and efficiently in line with approved work instructions, risk assessments and training.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, cutting lists, travel packs and production instructions to confirm material type, dimensions, hole positions and quantities.
  • Select, load and position steel sections and other raw materials, using designated lifting and material-handling equipment where trained and authorised.
  • Set machine parameters, stops, clamps, blades, drill tooling and cutting speeds appropriate to the material and job requirements.
  • Measure, mark out and process material accurately, including cutting to length and drilling holes to specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Complete first-off and in-process quality checks using measuring equipment such as tape measures, steel rules, squares, verniers and gauges.
  • Identify and report drawing discrepancies, material defects, machine faults, tooling wear and quality concerns promptly to the Production Supervisor.
  • Label, segregate and route completed parts correctly to support traceability and smooth flow to the next production stage.
  • Meet production targets while maximising machine utilisation, material yield and operational efficiency.
  • Carry out routine operator checks, cleaning and basic preventive maintenance, and support planned maintenance activities when required.
  • Maintain safe and controlled movement of raw material, work-in-progress and completed parts throughout the work area.
  • Keep the work area organised and compliant with housekeeping and 5S standards, including the safe removal of swarf, offcuts and waste.
  • Follow all Health & Safety requirements, including guarding, isolation and lockout procedures, manual-handling controls and the correct use of PPE.
  • Work collaboratively with Production, Quality, Engineering, Stores and Maintenance to resolve issues and support continuous improvement.
  • Complete production, quality and maintenance records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role and operational requirements.

  • Previous experience operating an industrial saw, drill line, CNC machinery or similar production equipment is desirable. Relevant role-specific training can be provided.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances and production documentation.
  • Good numeracy and practical measurement skills, with strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Experience of working with steel or using overhead cranes or lifting equipment is advantageous but not essential. Appropriate training will be provided.
  • Strong awareness of workplace safety and a consistent approach to machine guarding, isolation procedures, housekeeping and PPE requirements.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and resolving problems, including a willingness to stop work and escalate where a safety, quality or equipment concern arises.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to organise daily workload and manage production priorities while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Willingness to undertake role-specific training and develop competence across both saw and drill operations.
