This remote position will provide technical and project leadership throughout the complete infrastructure lifecycle, including capital planning, engineering design, design-build delivery, construction administration, startup, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and asset optimization. The successful candidate will have experience with municipal and industrial water and wastewater systems, capital improvement programs, treatment-process evaluation, operational performance, regulatory compliance, and owner-side representation.

Although the position is remote, the Principal Water/Wastewater Engineer will be expected to maintain regular communication with clients and project teams, travel to client and project locations, and collaborate effectively across multiple Stanley Consultants offices and disciplines.

  • Lead the planning, analysis, design, construction, startup, operation, rehabilitation, and optimization of municipal, federal, and industrial water and wastewater systems.
  • Serve as Project Manager, Technical Lead, Engineer of Record, or Principal-in-Charge, as appropriate for individual assignments.
  • Develop facility master plans, capital improvement recommendations, lifecycle evaluations, budgets, schedules, and implementation strategies.
  • Lead design-build, design-build-operate-maintain, retrofit, rehabilitation, and conventional design-bid-build projects.
  • Perform or direct process analysis, treatment optimization, technology evaluation, chemical trials, equipment selection, and value engineering.
  • Lead projects involving:
    • Municipal, commercial, and industrial water and wastewater systems
    • Wastewater collection, pumping, treatment, and biosolids management
    • Treatment-plant rehabilitation, retrofit, and operational optimization
    • Industrial wastewater characterization, pretreatment, treatment, reuse, and discharge
    • Physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes, controls, and chemical-feed systems
    • Asset management, CMMS, condition assessment, resilience, and capital planning
    • System testing, startup, commissioning, and operational transition
    • Environmental permitting, NPDES compliance, and federal infrastructure contracts
    • High-strength wastewater, water reuse, recovery, and zero-liquid-discharge applications
    • Review project requirements following award and confirm scope, work procedures, schedule, budget, staffing, quality-management requirements, vendor needs, and project risks.
    • Prepare or oversee project work plans, project initiation documents, schedules, budgets, staffing plans, and project closeout activities.
    • Lead preparation and review of calculations, technical reports, plans, specifications, cost estimates, permit applications, and construction documents.
    • Coordinate technical work across civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, structural, architectural, environmental, and CADD disciplines.
    • Provide technical oversight during construction, including submittal and shop-drawing reviews, requests for information, change evaluations, progress meetings, site observations, startup, commissioning, and project closeout.
    • Apply Stanley Consultants’ quality-management procedures and applicable standards, including AWWA, WEF, Ten States Standards, state regulatory requirements, and client-specific design criteria.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, communications, resources, procurement, and risk.
  • Establish clear assignments, deliverable dates, review responsibilities, and communication protocols for geographically distributed project teams.
  • Monitor project performance and take timely corrective action when scope, schedule, budget, staffing, or quality concerns arise.
  • Maintain consistent communication with clients, project teams, subcontractors, and Stanley Consultants leadership.
  • Support contract negotiations, amendments, scope development, fee preparation, and project financial management.
  • Deliver projects in accordance with client expectations and Stanley Consultants’ project-management and quality requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • At least 20 years of progressive experience in water, wastewater, environmental, industrial, or public infrastructure.
  • Professional Engineer license in a U.S. jurisdiction, or ability to obtain one within six months; ability to obtain additional registrations as needed.
  • Experience delivering municipal and industrial water and wastewater projects through planning, design, construction, startup, operations, and rehabilitation.
  • Experience evaluating industrial wastewater characteristics, treatment, discharge, permitting, and water-reuse requirements.
  • Knowledge of industrial treatment technologies, including clarification, filtration, membranes, biological treatment, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, demineralization, and advanced reuse.
  • Ability to integrate water and wastewater systems with industrial processes, utilities, equipment, and site infrastructure.
  • Experience with alternative delivery methods such as design-build, progressive design-build, construction manager at risk, or engineer-procure-construct.
  • Experience collaborating with owners, contractors, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Project-management experience overseeing scope, schedule, budget, quality, staffing, communications, and risk.
  • Strong communication and technical-writing skills, with proficiency in Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to work effectively and remotely and travel as needed, including overnight.
  • Participation in AWWA, WEF, or related state and regional organizations is desirable.
  • The position is remote, but success will require active participation with clients and Stanley Consultants teams. The selected candidate will be expected to:

    • Maintain a professional and reliable home-office environment.
    • Be available for client and team meetings during established core working hours.
    • Use Microsoft Teams and other approved collaboration platforms for regular communication.
    • Travel to Stanley Consultants offices when needed for project workshops, training, interviews, and team-development activities.
    • Travel to client facilities and project sites to maintain relationships and support project delivery.
    • Coordinate work across time zones and communicate availability, deadlines, and project risks proactively.
    • Comply with Stanley Consultants’ information-security, records-management, quality-management, and remote-work requirements.
