Under the direction of physicians and physicists, assists in the planning, set-up and delivery of a therapeutic dose of radiation to minimal but adequate volume of tissue while preserving normal tissue as much as possible.

Responsibilities

→Performs simulations for treatment under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist.

→Correctly fabricates immobilization devices and custom shielding as necessary.

→Delivers the therapeutic doses of Radiation according to the prescription written by the Radiation Oncologist.

→Takes port films, labels and has them checked appropriately.

→Under the direction of the medical physicist, ensures Quality Control Procedures on equipment.

→Records in treatment records, including dose addition, documentation of port films, adjustments in prescriptions, diagrams, blocking and landmarks.

→Schedules patient appointments.

→Keeps daily Log Sheets, including documentation of inpatients, finishes, new courses, new patients, electron patients and non-malignant cases.

→Keeps records necessary for department statistics.

→Participates in the clinical instruction of Radiation Therapy students.

→Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Graduate of 2 year Radiation Therapist Program

New Graduates:

Official transcript from accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school’s registrar’s office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation.
Primary source education verification required within 90 days of graduation.

Required Licensure/Certification:

NYS Licensure as Radiation Therapist required OR must hold NYS permit and obtain licensure within six months of hire.

ARRT certification

Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements.
