Responsibilities
~3 min readControl & Diagnostic Systems (CDS) is a discipline within P&W Engineering, responsible for control system architecture, safety and reliability, thermal management, dynamic analysis, software design and verification.
Within CDS, the Control System Engineering and Electrification (CSEE) is responsible for the end-to-end Control Systems Engineering and Electrical Propulsion Systems Engineering Value Stream.
Within CSEE, the Electric Propulsion System Engineering (EPSE) group is responsible for architecting, designing, and developing game-changing hybrid-electric propulsion systems. EPSE engineers work across all CDS subdisciplines to help achieve program objectives of the CDS CIPT.
EPSE engineers apply skills from across a wide range of PW Engineering disciplines such as Performance, Operability, Mechanical Disciplines, Aerothermal Management, to develop, integrate and certify subsystems and hardware for Civil and Military customers. EPSE engineers work the entire system life cycle from 1) control system technology development, 2) interpreting customer requirements, decomposing them to hardware and software, 3) technical and project oversight of hardware implementation, to 4) ensuring control system compliance across engine, flight and customer compliance testing, and finally, 5) leading system and hardware field issue triage and resolution.
EPSE engineers work collaboratively with industry partners, including key suppliers and customers, in a team environment, to advance the technology readiness level of emerging hybrid-electric systems and components. EPSE engineers support the concept design definition, system integration, prototype testing and product detail design development, certification and validation, both for systems and components. EPSE engineers support technical proposals, cost estimates, concept trade-off analysis and modeling, in support of advanced hybrid-electric projects.
As an Electric Propulsion Systems Engineer II, you will perform the following:
- →Systems engineering of electric powertrain systems for aerospace electric propulsion.
- →Development of electrical system and subsystem requirements to meet platform level objectives.
- →Modeling of electric powertrain systems at various levels of fidelity to inform designs and processes.
- →Electrical system protections design including protection strategy, analysis of trip curves and selectivity, insulation coordination, and failure analysis.
- →Development of integrated electric system verification and validation plans.
- →Analysis of simulation and test data, presentation and visualization of results for an audience.
- →Ability to travel up to 25% to support electric powertrain subsystem and electrified engine testing at P&W and partner sites in North America and Europe.
- →Candidates hired will begin their first 2.5 years at Pratt & Whitney as part of the Engineering Development Program (EDP). This program consists of three rotations that are 12 months - 9 months - 9 months in duration and typically occur in three distinct disciplines within the hiring department. The intent of our EDP is to offer breadth & depth in various technical experiences through challenging positions available in our organizations. This program will help expand your professional and technical competencies that will serve as the foundation for exceptional contributions that you will make at Pratt & Whitney.
