The Senior Staff Attorney will play a leading role in complex, high-impact litigation aimed at protecting civil rights and holding public institutions accountable. Working with local government partners and a nationwide network of advocates, you will develop and lead cases addressing abuses of power by federal and state authorities, as well as private actors. The role combines strategic legal analysis, courtroom advocacy, case management, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders. You will oversee litigation from initial case development through resolution, while advising government clients on legal, political, and practical considerations. As a senior member of a fully remote litigation team, you will help shape legal strategies affecting communities and public interests across the country. This position reports to the Litigation Director and requires occasional travel for hearings, conferences, and organizational events.

  • Identify opportunities for legal advocacy and develop strategic pathways to advance civil rights protections.

  • Independently develop and lead litigation from initial concept through resolution, including factual and legal development, case strategy, motions practice, discovery, oral arguments, and client management.

  • Lead case teams and coordinate litigation activities across multiple matters in state and federal courts.

  • Conduct complex legal research and provide guidance on laws and legal developments across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Draft, review, edit, and provide feedback on persuasive legal briefs, analytical documents, and other written work products.

  • Advise government clients on legal strategy, political considerations, and justice-related implications of specific cases.

  • Lead and participate in litigation team meetings and strategic discussions, ensuring alignment, collaboration, and clear next steps.

  • Engage with government officials, co-counsel, community-based organizations, and other internal and external stakeholders.

  • Synthesize stakeholder input and feedback to inform case development and litigation strategy.

  • Contribute to an innovative, inclusive, and supportive team of advocates working to advance civil rights.
