The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, high-quality meals for construction personnel at a remote work camp in King Cove, Alaska. The Cook will plan and prepare meals for a crew, maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen and dining area, manage food inventory, and ensure all food is prepared and stored in accordance with applicable health and safety standards.

The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, able to work independently in a remote environment, and comfortable preparing meals for a large crew on a consistent schedule.

  • Plan, prepare, and serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for construction camp personnel.
  • Prepare a variety of meals that accommodate different dietary needs and preferences when required.
  • Follow established menus, recipes, portion guidelines, and meal schedules.
  • Maintain sufficient food supplies and monitor inventory to prevent shortages or waste.
  • Receive, inspect, organize, and properly store food and kitchen supplies.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of refrigerated, frozen, and dry goods.
  • Ensure proper food handling, preparation, cooking, cooling, and storage procedures are followed.
  • Maintain kitchen, food preparation areas, dining areas, appliances, utensils, and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Follow all applicable food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Monitor food temperatures and maintain appropriate refrigeration and freezer temperatures.
  • Minimize food waste while ensuring adequate portions and availability for the crew.
  • Clean dishes, cookware, utensils, appliances, countertops, floors, and other kitchen areas as needed.
  • Coordinate meal preparation with camp management and construction schedules.
  • Adjust meal preparation and quantities based on crew size and changing work schedules.
  • Maintain a professional and positive attitude when interacting with employees and camp personnel.
  • Report equipment problems, food shortages, safety concerns, or other issues to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist with kitchen and camp-related duties as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a cook, preferably in a construction camp, remote camp, institutional, industrial, military, or similar high-volume environment.
  • Experience preparing meals for groups of 20 or more is preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a remote or Alaska-based work environment is highly desirable.
  • Food Handler certification or ServSafe certification preferred, as applicable.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, and safe food-handling practices.
  • Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals for a large crew.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and proper food storage practices.
  • Ability to plan meals and manage food quantities based on crew size.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, orderly, and safe kitchen.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote construction camp environment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical kitchen duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry food supplies, boxes, cookware, and other items as required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable and flexible with the ability to accommodate changing work schedules.
  • Work is performed at a remote construction camp in King Cove, Alaska.
  • Position may require living at the work camp for extended rotations.
  • Work schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts based on construction and camp requirements.
  • Employee must be comfortable working in a remote environment with limited access to services and supplies.
  • Exposure to cold weather, wind, rain, and other Alaska environmental conditions may occur.
  • Position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying.

Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry food supplies and kitchen equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as chopping, stirring, cleaning, and food preparation.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Experience cooking for construction, military, industrial, or remote work camps.
  • Experience preparing meals for large crews.
  • Alaska or remote-site work experience.
  • Current Food Handler or ServSafe certification.
  • Ability to develop rotating menus and prepare meals using available ingredients.
  • Experience with food ordering, inventory control, and cost-conscious meal planning.

The Cook is expected to comply with all company policies, camp rules, food safety requirements, environmental requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The employee must maintain a safe and sanitary work environment and immediately report any food safety, health, or workplace safety concerns.

  • $32.15/hour plus fringe rate.
