Job Description
As the Process Safety Engineer, you will play a critical role in protecting people, assets, and operations while driving continuous improvement. This role provides a unique opportunity to develop expertise in both process safety and plant engineering while building leadership experience across operations, maintenance, reliability, and capital project execution.

In your role as the process safety engineer, you will lead the implementation of ADM’s Total Process Safety (TPS) program, including Process Safety Management (PSM) regulated chemicals and other potentially dangerous processes (PDPs), to meet and exceed corporate and local compliance standards. In addition, you will serve as a key engineering resource for the facility, leading process and maintenance improvement initiatives that enhance safety, reliability, and operational performance. Through the design and execution of projects, you will help create a safer, more efficient and dependable operation.

This role will be based in the Decatur Glycols facility, which produces USP grade propylene glycol from bio based glycerin via catalytic hydrogenolysis. The facility also operates a steam methane reforming (SMR) hydrogen plant. The position reports to the plant Engineering Manager.
 
The Decatur Complex, located in Decatur, IL, consists of 6 processing plants, onsite cogeneration and water treatment facilities, and employs ~1500 plant operations colleagues and an additional ~1000 contractors.  

Job Responsibilities 

• Foster a facility process safety culture based on reviewing and meeting goals, continuous risk reduction, and prevention of process safety incidents. 
• Monitor, evaluate, and report process safety performance at the facility
• Lead and participate in process hazard analyses (PHAs), layers of protection analysis (LOPA), pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), incident investigations, and PSM/TPS compliance audits. Champion related action plans.
• Develop and maintain TPS programs and documentation
• Project design, development, and management for process safety improvements.
• Act as process safety SME on other projects and management of change (MOC) reviews
• Serve as subject matter expert on high pressure hydrogen production and distribution
• Deliver capital projects safely, on time, and within budget.
• Collaborate with maintenance on plant mechanical integrity inspections and repairs
• Guide maintenance and operations teams to develop and refine asset reliability processes and practices, including preventative and predictive maintenance programs, with particular emphasis on critical safety device (CSD) maintenance
• Lead root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures and implement long-term fixes to improve asset downtime
• Review and analyze asset performance data and maintenance history to identify trends, predict failures, and support improvement plans to close gaps

Job Requirements  

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or related field 
• 5+ years of engineering experience, preferably in a chemical manufacturing or agricultural processing facility 
• Strong problem solving, diagnostic, and analytical skills
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage change, and deliver complex engineering projects.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and delivering results through collaboration.
• Be willing and able to work in plant areas including walking long distances, climbing stairs and ladders, tolerating hot and cold temperatures, and moving through close spaces.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP requirements.
• Experience leading PHAs, incident investigations, and Management of Change (MOC) processes.
• Experience supporting hydrogen production or other high-pressure gas systems.

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.
