The Opportunity
The Accounting Manager reports to the Director of Finance and provides support in overseeing the organization’s day-to-day accounting operations, monthly close, grant and fund accounting, financial reporting, audit preparation, and compliance. This role serves as the primary internal accounting lead responsible for coordinating and reviewing accounting activities performed by the external accounting team and bookkeeping team and ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the organization’s financial records.
The Accounting Manager plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, supporting budget and grant monitoring, and helping ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and organizational policies and procedures.

Since 1972, ALC has fought for access to affordable housing in San Francisco’s Chinatown, litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color, across our Housing Rights, Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Justice, and National Democracy Initiative programs, and other emerging areas of law.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Maintain consultant contracts and ensure payments comply with contract terms and approved amendments.
- →Strengthen internal controls and improve accounting policies, procedures, and workflows.
- →Serve as a key finance contact for contract payment status and collaborate with internal teams and external accounting partners to improve financial systems and processes.
Requirements
~2 min read- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible non-profit accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and general accounting principles
- Experience in state and local grant administration
- Experience with creating and monitoring organizational budgets
- Experience with nonprofit fund accounting, restricted funds, and grant tracking.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating internal controls.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with Google Suite and Microsoft SharePoint
- Experience with ADP or equivalent payroll service as well as QuickBooks and/or other accounting software.
