Audubon is currently seeking a Radiation Safety Officer to join our team.  The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) - Working RSO administers and oversees the radiation protection program supporting facility integrity and industrial radiography at an assigned refinery site. This is a hands-on leadership role that includes performing radiographic inspections using pulsed X-ray systems and sealed-source gamma radiography, as authorized by applicable licenses and procedures. 

 

The RSO maintains licensing and regulatory compliance, oversees radioactive material security and accountability, administers radiation safety procedures and training, and supports safe execution of radiography work. The RSO has authority to stop radiographic operations when a safety or compliance concern requires it. 

 

Responsibilities

  • →All employees are responsible for supporting Audubon Companies’ Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures. This includes:
  • →Performing duties in a manner that protects personal and team health and safety
  • →Participating in required HSE training, meetings, and reporting activities
  • →Identifying and reporting hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions
  • →Following safe work practices and complying with applicable regulatory requirements
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain radioactive materials license applications, amendments, and required supporting records. 
  • Administer the Radiation Protection Program in accordance with applicable California regulations, NRC requirements, Agreement State requirements, and company procedures. 
  • Maintain X-ray device registrations when applicable and track license conditions, renewals, and regulatory commitments. 
  • Serve as the primary regulatory contact for the California CDPH Radiologic Health Branch, NRC, and other applicable agencies. 
  • Maintain source tracking, inventory, receipt, transfer, storage, and disposal records for radioactive materials. 
  • Ensure secure storage, transportation, packaging, labeling, marking, and shipping documentation for radioactive materials in accordance with applicable DOT and IATA/IMDG requirements. 
  • Oversee leak testing, source accountability, transport security, chain of custody, emergency planning, and source retrieval arrangements. 
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce written radiation safety procedures and the ALARA program. 
  • Administer personnel dosimetry, review dose reports, and investigate abnormal exposures or potential overexposures. 
  • Ensure radiation surveys are completed and survey instruments are properly calibrated and maintained. 
  • Establish and enforce restricted areas, controlled areas, exclusion zones, and access controls for radiographic work. 
  • Perform industrial radiography using pulsed X-ray systems and sealed-source gamma radiography, including authorized isotopes and devices. 
  • Conduct radiographic inspections of piping, pressure vessels, tanks, and structural components within assigned qualifications and procedures. 
  • Conduct job hazard analyses for radiography work and verify required controls before, during, and after exposures. 
  • Train, qualify, and mentor radiographers and assistants; maintain required training and qualification records. 
  • Lead internal audits and regulatory inspections; document findings, corrective actions, and program improvements. 
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports within applicable timelines and lead root-cause investigations when required. 
  • Respond to radiation incidents and abnormal exposure events and coordinate source retrieval actions when needed. 
  • Suspend radiographic operations when unsafe conditions, license violations, or other compliance concerns are identified. 
  • Other duties as assigned by management. 

Requirements

  • The employee regularly stands, walks, uses hands to handle radiographic equipment, reaches, and communicates by talking and listening. The role may require carrying or moving radiographic instruments and accessories, climbing stairs or ladders, accessing elevated or restricted industrial areas, and occasionally stooping or kneeling. The employee must be able to wear required PPE and dosimetry and perform work in accordance with radiation safety procedures. 
  • Experience: Seven or more years of industrial radiography field experience required. 
  • At least five years of experience as a Working RT Level II required. 
  • Demonstrated gamma radiography experience, including sealed-source operations such as Ir-192, Co-60, or Se-75 as applicable. 
  • Experience managing radioactive materials programs and NRC or Agreement State regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with transportation compliance under 49 CFR and IATA/IMDG requirements. 
  • 80-hour RT classroom training meeting NAS-410 requirements and 40-hour Radiation Safety Officer course. 
  • QSA retrieval or source retrieval training required. 
  • ASNT Level II in RT required; Level III preferred. 
  • 49 CFR hazardous materials certification required; IATA/IMDG certification preferred. 
  • Strong technical writing skills for licensing, procedures, records, and regulatory reporting. 
  • Advanced understanding of radiation physics, shielding, radiation surveys, and personnel dosimetry. 
  • Ability to lead a high-risk safety and regulatory program and make sound field decisions. 

 

  • The role operates in office and refinery field environments, including active industrial units and radiographic work areas. Potential exposures include industrial noise, outdoor weather, moving equipment, chemicals or fumes, elevated locations, and ionizing radiation during controlled radiography work. The employee must follow radiation controls, site procedures, and PPE requirements. Travel may be required for training, regulatory matters, or project support.
  • This is a working RSO role supporting facility integrity radiography at an assigned refinery site. The position combines radiation program administration with field inspection work. The RSO is expected to maintain readiness for regulatory inspections and emergency response and to use stop-work authority when required.
