Project Engineer - Plan Checking

We are seeking a Project Engineer to join our Government Services team in Vallejo. In this role, you will review and evaluate engineering plans, specifications, technical reports, and supporting documents submitted for a wide range of public and private development projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in civil engineering principles and a thorough understanding of design standards, regulatory requirements, and permitting processes.

• →Review civil engineering improvement plans to ensure conformance with agency standards, ordinances, project conditions of approval, and industry practice 

• →Review grading and drainage plans for various compliance conditions 

• →Review storm drain plans and hydrology/hydraulic calculations and reports for various compliance conditions   

• →Resolve problems related to local city codes and city specifications in order to bring drawings and specifications into compliance 

• →Coordinate with Surveyors regarding tentative maps and/or land development applications for conformance with agency standards (entitlement process)   

• →Assist in establishing and/or revising departmental policies due to changes in methods of construction or field applications of codes; Trains staff in application of new codes, policies, and procedures  
• →Coordination of transportation infrastructure projects including roadways, corridors, roundabouts, curbs, retaining walls, overpasses, transit facilities, and ADA curb ramps
• →Coordination of traffic engineering projects including signal design, pavement marking/striping, signage, and multimodal corridor improvements
• →Preparation of geometric design plans and profiles in compliance with Caltrans, local, and regional standards
• →Development of grading, drainage, and stormwater management plans for transportation corridors
• →Design of transportation-related utility systems and coordination with public agencies and utility providers
• →Development of quantity takeoffs and cost estimates
• →Integration of multimodal and sustainable design elements such as complete streets, green infrastructure, and ADA compliance
• →Apply Federal, State (e.g. Caltrans), City, and County codes
• →Preparation of conceptual design studies and alternatives analyses for roadway and multimodal improvements

• →Other related duties as assigned

• Bachelor’s of Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of progressively responsible work in public works or a related setting.
• Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with architects, engineers, builders, inspectors, and the general public.  
• Must have the ability to communicate to train staff.
• Role requires 10-30% of travel time

Physical Demands: Must be able to regularly talk, hear and operate a computer, keyboard and mouse and occasionally lift, pull/push and carry up to 20 pounds with accommodations.

Work Conditions: Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds at a low or moderate level consistent with an office setting. Exposure to high-stress, fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Travel to other BKF locations and client sites may be required.
